Dear Student,
We are very pleased you have expressed an interest in attending the University of
Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. As a new graduate student to
the Conservatory, you will be required to take music theory and music history placement
exams. The day after the exams, you will meet with an advisor to be given your exam
results and schedule classes for the Fall semester. You will be given the exact time of
your advising appointment for the following day during the morning of the exam date
you attend. Please read the following information carefully.
You will need to return the RSVP portion of this document with your completed
information to Helen Perry (perryh@umkc.edu or fax to 816- 235-5264). Please note
you will also be receiving information regarding the Conservatory’s enrollment deposit.
The enrollment deposit will guarantee your seat in the Conservatory’s Fall 2016 class.
All graduate students beginning a new degree (including students who recently finished
a Master’s Degree at UMKC) must complete the matriculation exam before registering
for classes. Candidates for the Graduate Certificates (Performer’s and Artist’s
Certificates) do not need to take the matriculation exams unless intending to take a
graduate level music history or music theory class. Certificate students must contact
Helen Perry at perryh@umkc.edu for advising over the summer and before Friday,
August 12th.
FEES
All students must be enrolled for fall semester classes by Friday, August 19th at 5:00
PM to avoid a late fee. Information can be found at this website -
http://www.umkc.edu/central
Aural Skills: The aural skills exam consists of fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice
questions covering such topics as the aural identification of intervals, scales (including
“church” modes and twentieth-century collections such as whole-tone), triads, and
seventh chords. You will also be asked to identify meter from recorded music, rhythms,
and harmonic progressions (diatonic and chromatic). The exam time limit is 30 minutes.
Written Theory: The written theory exam consists of fill-in-the-blank and multiple-
choice questions designed to assess your background in such topics as music
fundamentals (e.g., key signatures, scales, keys), form, partwriting, and diatonic and
chromatic harmonic analysis. There are also questions about basic twentieth-century
styles, as well as techniques like set theory and twelve-tone theory. Finally, you will be
asked to answer analytical questions about musical excerpts that cover such topics as
cadences, phrase/form, and harmony. The exam time limit is 45 minutes.
Information regarding these topics can be found in most standard undergraduate theory
texts such as:
Jane Clendinning and Elizabeth West Marvin, The Musician’s Guide to Theory
and Analysis
Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne, Tonal Harmony
Steven G. Laitz, The Complete Musician
Miguel Roig-Francoli, Harmony in Context
Music History:
Master’s Students - The music history examination for Master¹s students consists of a
listening exam of 8-10 excerpts of music from throughout Western musical history. You
will be expected to identify genre, chronology (approximate time when it was written),
and musical and stylistic attributes and provide reasoning for your choices using
appropriate musical terminology. The Norton anthology of Western Music is
recommended as a good source to review, focusing on style periods and their
characteristics, the development of genres, and major composers and their
compositions. In addition, some areas have exams specific to the area of concentration.
Doctoral Students - The music history examination for Doctoral students consists of a
short listening exam of 8-10 excerpts of music from throughout Western musical history.
You will be expected to identify genre, chronology (approximate time when it was
written), and musical and stylistic attributes and provide reasoning for your choices
using appropriate musical terminology. In addition, doctoral students receive a list of
terms from throughout music history which must be defined in short-answer format.
Additional Instructions
All sections of the exams will be taken online using Blackboard on the Conservatory lab
computers. Students need to bring their own headphones/ear buds to the exams.
Instructions about how to log in to Blackboard at UMKC will be sent approximately
2 weeks before the chosen exam date.
All sections of the test must be taken on the same day. The exams
can be taken one time only.
Doctoral students who have had a recent research and bibliography course which
stressed writing, may be exempted from Research and Bibliography in Music (CONS
5593). To be exempted from the course you must take the optional bibliography portion
of the matriculation exam. In addition, a paper written in such a course or in other
similar courses will need to be submitted for review. Please bring your paper to the
exam and submit to the proctor or be able to provide an electronic copy within 24 hours
of the exam. The Research and Bibliography in Music waiver exam is offered during the
matriculation exams.
All MM and DMA performance majors in voice must demonstrate proficiency in Italian,
German and French lyric diction as tested by the diction instructors. Students who are
deficient in the diction of any of the three languages will be required to participate in an
appropriate segment of Foreign Language for Singers (CONS 185A-D) and will then be
retested for proficiency.
The proficiency exam will be held on the morning of Monday, August 22nd, 2016. There
will be a sign up list for a time on the door of Grant 226 as of
Friday, August 19th. The exam will be 10 minutes in length. You will be asked to read a
song text in Italian, German and French to assess your current proficiency in each
language.
All MM and DMA performance majors in piano must complete a piano literature
diagnostic exam prior to the first semester of coursework. This exam is used to
determine your current knowledge in Piano Literature. Coursework in piano literature
may be required based on the results of the exam. The exam will be held at 1:30-2:45
PM on Friday, August 19th in Grant Hall 333.
