ABSTRACT

This qualitative study examines the experiences of eight elementary principals from the
Midwest who were involved in dual-career relationships with children under the age of 18. The
primary data collection method was in-depth interviews. The data were coded and analyzed
according to the research questions. The research resulted in three major themes which emerged
out of the experiences shared by the elementary principals: 1) there exists a gap between actual
and perceived values; 2) stress develops from a high number of work tasks; 3) coping strategies
are utilized to manage daily stressors. I analyzed these themes from the principals’ experiences
through the theoretical lenses of theory-in-use and espoused theory, symbolic interactionism,
cultural hegemony, and authentic leadership. The experiences associated with the elementary
principals in this study serve as a framework for discussion about the gap that exists between
principals’ actual and perceived values. This research revealed a gap between elementary
principals’ actual and perceived values. A conclusion to be drawn from this finding is that
principals involved in dualcareer relationships are unable to recognize the gap between their
actual and perceived values due to a strong commitment toward both their profession and
families. A high number of time intensive work-related tasks contribute to increased stress and
an imbalance between work and home roles. The gap is held apart by the perception of the
immediacy of work task completion in comparison to the perception of less immediate family
needs.

Recommendations are offered for elementary principals, district level administrators, and for
further research possibilities. Given that there are a variety of factors that affect the gap between
actual and perceived values, the proposed recommendations should be considered carefully on an
individual basis.

ABSTRACT A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE EXPERIENCES OF HELPING

PROFESSIONALS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES FEBRUARY 2010 MADELINE
LORRAINE PETERS, B.S. UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST M.Ed.,
UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ed.D., UNIVERSITY OF
MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Barbara J. Love The purpose of this
study is to explore the extent, to which professionals in helping professions (PHPS) with learning
disabilities are able to name the support, services, and assistance that they require to successfully
engage in the full range of activities for their daily living. Additionally, the study explores how
PHPS describe their experiences with support, services, and assistance available to them. The
study was conducted using a qualitative, phenomenological in-depth interview methodology. The
study sample consisted of 10 helping professionals with learning disabilities that work in helping
professions. Data was collected using audiotaping of interviews and field notes. Audio tapes
were transcribed and data from the transcriptions was analyzed for this study. Nine major themes
emerged from the analysis of the study data the themes were disability, daily living, oppression,
self-esteem, self-reflection, creative management, creative management adaptive behaviors,
services and support. Key findings from the study suggest that professionals in helping
professions (PHPs) with learning disabilities are creative, strong willed and persevere despite the
odds. Most of the PHPs went through school without accommodations and relied upon their own
abilities and determination to pass. Two out of the ten PHPs were diagnosed with learning
disabilities when they were children. Three of the PHPs were born before learning disabilities
were formalized and labeled as a disability. The data suggests that people with learning
disabilities need support, services and assistance in all areas of their daily living.
Recommendations for change are provided for addressing the problematic themes that emerged
from the data.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this phenomenological study was to add to the body of knowledge and to get
an understanding of how women with chronic nonmalignant pain cope in everyday life and how
it affects their well-being and daily activities. Chronic nonmalignant pain has been defined as a
pain that has lasted 6 months or longer, is ongoing, is due to non-life-threatening causes, has not
responded to current available treatment methods, and may continue for the remainder of the
patient´s life. Coping refers to anything the person does or thinks to manage demands so it either
modifies the environment, or changes the meaning of the situation. Semi-structured, in-depth,
tape-recorded interviews were used to collect data after an informed consent had been obtained
from five women with chronic nonmalignant pain in different sites of the body. Their ages
ranged from 36 to 53 years. Analysis of data followed a method adapted from the Vancouver
School of doing Phenomenology. An overriding theme, with three major themes and 14
subthemes emerged from the data. The overriding theme ´Keeping the pain tolerable` can be
described as the main goal for the women. In order to be able to keep the pain tolerable the
women feel they must ´Learn to live with the pain` which is the first major theme which focuses
on searching for pain relief, it´s causes, and cure, if that exists. ´Feeling one is not alone` is
another major theme and describes the necessary support both provided by others and by
themselves to others in a similar situation. ´No-one can see that something is wrong` is the last
major theme and is centred on the pain´s effect on the self-image and self-esteem, and the
importance of an understanding from others and a positive self-image. To be able to live a good
and fulfilling life with chronic nonmalignant pain and cope with it, the women described how
they had to build a new pattern where the pain no longer controls. In reality this pain is very
much a part of the sufferer´s life at the same time as it is bound to affect other members of his or
her family. In all likelihood it has to be accepted as an incurable one. Intermittent reliefs may
help but when the pain recurs; one must know how to respond. The result of this study can be
helpful for health care professionals to increase the quality of care for chronic pain sufferers and
be a guide for further research focusing on coping with pain.
