The instructions fo r adjusting the hydraulic system are separated into three groups.
G roup 1 s e ttin g s -A d ju s tm e n ts to the selectamatic control valve.
Group 2 s e ttin g s -A d ju s tm e n ts to the selectamatic control valve on the ramshaft bracket.
G roup 3 s e ttin g s -T ra c to r adjustments.

HYDRAULICS GROUP 1 SETTINGS

GROUP 1 SETTINGS-ADJUSTMENTS TO THE

SELECTAMATIC CONTROL VALVE
A . A D J U S T IN G THE SPO O L
VA LVE

1. Put soft metal covers A over the hard jaws of 3. Carefully hold the selectamatic valve body
a vice. in the vice so that the spool valve B is hori­
zontal. Use a screw driver or punch C to push
the spool fu lly inward against the pressure
o f the spring.

2. Make a note of the dim ension on the end of
the spool B. This dim ension is the required
m ovem ent o f the spool.
4. Put a dial gauge D into the position shown.
The probe o f the dial gauge m ust be hori­
zontal and pushing against the sm ooth face
o f the spool. Make sure that the probe does
not touch the centre hole in the spool. Adjust
the dial gauge so that the pointer is at zero.
Let the spring fo r the spool valve slow ly
push the spool out tow ard the dial gauge.
Make a note o f the m ovem ent of the pointer.

5. Compare the pointer m ovem ent w ith the

dim ension given on the spool. If the pointer
m ovem ent is m ore than the given dim en­
sion, tighten the nuts D on the end of the
spool. If the pointer m ovem ent is less,
loosen the nuts. Repeat the operation until
the p ointer m ovem ent is no more than
0.025mm greater than the given dim ension.
The p ointer m ovem ent m ust never be less
than the given dim ension.

4. Fit the pin fo r rocker shaft into the top hole in
the setting tool E (hole X Step 1). Push the
setting tool dow nw ard until it is against the
shoulder of the ram shaft bracket.
5. Hold the rocker F against the stop plate. Use
feeler gauges G to measure the clearance
between the rocker and the spool valve. Add
or rem ove the shim s under the stop plate to
make the clearance 0.025 - 0.076mm. Make
sure that the stop plate and shims are on
the ir seat and that the screw is tight.

These tractors have tw o positions on the selector
dial i.e. DRAFT and POSITION. There is no adjust­
m ent necessary to the stop plate. Three shims
w ith a total thickness o f 1.14mm are fitted under
the stop plate. These give the required clearance
between the rocker and the spool valve.

These tractors have tw o positions on the selector
dial i.e. DRAFT and POSITION. Norm ally there is
no adjustm e n t necessary to the stop plate.
A pro ble m can occur when the selector dial is in
POSITION and the linkage is at its lowest point.
The linkage does not rise when the linkage
co n tro l lever is m oved rearward over the first part
o f its travel. A t some point the linkage w ill rise
su ddenly and from there to the top w ill operate
n orm a lly. This rough m ovem ent is caused by the
rocker m aking contact w ith the abutm ent plate.
To prevent this problem do the follow ing.
1. Remove the selectamatic valve from the
tractor.
2. Remove the stop plate A from the
selectam atic valve body. Add shims B so
that the total thickness is 1.14mm. Fit the
shim s and the stop plate to the selectamatic
valve body. Make sure that they are on their
seat. Use the screw C to hold the parts in
position.
3. Install the selectamatic valve.

Before making any tractor adjustm ents you must
do the fo llo w in g :
i) Remove any d irt from and around hydraulic
com ponents and controls
ii) Check the level o f hydraulic/transm ission
oil in the reservoir.
Add m ore o f the specified oil if the level is
low.
iii) Remove any air from the system.
iv) Check the m ovem ent of the linkage control
lever (tractors w ith cab or flat deck).

1. Put the tra ctor on level ground.
2. Select DRAFT on the selector dial A. Move
the linkage control lever B fu lly forw ard.
3. Put a clean container b e lo w th e pipe connec­
tion C. This connection is just forward of the
relief valve D. Disconnect the hydraulic
pipes.

4. Put the engine stop control into the stop
position. Turn the starter key clockwise into
the START position. Hold the key in this
p osition until air free oil flow s from the dis­
connected hydraulic pipe. Turn the starter
key to the OFF position. Connect the
h ydrau lic pipes.

5. Remove the dum p valve E from the rear axle
case. Remove the plate F. Fit the dum p valve
into its original hole. Open the dum p valve
by p u llin g the knob up.
6. Turn the plug for the by-pass valve G tw o
re vo lutio n s counter-clockwise. Move the
linkage control lever fu ily rearward into the
SELECT position. Start and run the engine
u ntil air free oil flow s from the by-pass valve
plug. M ove the linkage control lever forward
from the SELECT position.
7. Tighten the by-pass valve plug. Remove the
d u m p valve then install the plate. Fit the
d um p valve. Stop the engine.

11. M ove the linkage control lever fully rear

w ard into the SELECT position. If a three-
w ay valve is fitted m ove its operating lever
into the 'L' position. Start the engine.
Loosen the air removal screw H at the front
o f the ram shaft cylinder. Tighten the air
rem oval screw when air free oil is flow ing.
Release the linkage control lever. Stop the
engine.

9. Turn the plugs G tw o revolutions counter­

clockwise. Move the linkage control lever
fu lly rearward into the SELECT position.
Start and run the engine until air free oil
flo w s from the valve plugs. Move the
linkage control lever forw ard from the
SELECT position.
10. Tighten the tw o plugs then install the plate.
Stop the engine.

12. Pull the lever J upward to open the dum p

valve. Start the engine. Move the linkage
control lever fu lly rearward into the SELECT
position. Release the linkage control lever
after 20 seconds. Close the dum p valve.
Stop the engine.

POSITION on the selector dial B. Move the
linkage control lever into the RAISE posit­
ion.
2b. Lift the linkage by hand to its full height.
Low er the linkage by 40m m at the lower link
ends D. Use blocks to hold the linkage in this
position.

4. Loosen the tw o nuts G. Put a punch H into

the hole in the edge of the ramshaft cam J.
Use the punch to turn the ramshaft cam until
the roller K is seated in the notch. Carefully
tighten the tw o nuts to a torque of 9Nm.

5. Look at the cork gasket. If it is damaged fit a

new gasket then install the cover. Tighten
the setscrews. Remove the blocks from the
low er links if used.

selector dial A.

co ntro l housing. It is fitted to the front of the
rear axle on the right-hand side.

8. Fit a 0.05mm feeler gauge P between the

9. Turn the Nyloc nut E clockwise until the
0.05m m feeler gauge can just be moved
between the rocker lever and the push rod.
Remove the feeler gauge.
10. Fit the cork gasket and cover for the right-
hand ram shaft bracket. Use a new cork
gasket if there is any damage.

1. Start the engine. Set the engine speed to
1800 r/m in. Select POSITION on the selector
dial A. Move the linkage control lever B
backwards and forw ards but not into the
SELECT position. Release the linkage
control lever in several different positions.
The friction disc needs adjusting if:
a) the linkage control lever moves on its own.
b) the linkage control lever is d ifficult to move.
2. Tighten or loosen the tw o nuts C to make the
m ovem ent correct. Part D is the friction disc.
NOTE: The tw o nuts m ust never be too tight.
Check that the linkage co ntro l lever w ill
m ove from the SELECT p osition when
released. Later tractors have one lock n ut
fitte d instead o f the tw o nuts C.

1. S tart the engine. Set the engine speed to
1800 r/m in . Select POSITION on the selector
dial A. Hold the linkage control lever B in the
SELECT position until the linkage is at its full
height and the pum p relief valve opens. You
w ill hear the oil flo w in g through the relief
valve and the engine noise change.
2. S lo w ly move the linkage control lever
fo rw a rd until the relief valve closes. The link­
age m ust not lower. Hold the linkage control
lever in this position.
3. Loosen the tw o nuts C on the spring carrier
D. M ove the spring carrier until it comes in
contact w ith the end o f the plate E. Tighten
the nuts C. Stop the engine.

1. Select POSITION on the selector dial A.

Loosen the nut B on the select stop C. Move

lever B forw ard until it is 3m m from the end
o f its travel.

until the plate E makes contact w ith the pin
F. Tighten the nuts C.

To do this setting you m ust have w eights on the

lo w e r links but not on the top link. The sensing
u n it m ust not be in tension or compression.

3. Move the select stop until it just makes con­

tact w ith the linkage control lever F. Tighten
the nut B then release the linkage control
lever.

6. S tart the engine. When the linkage has

reached its highest position, stop the
engine.

4. Turn the locknut D clockwise until it alm ost

touches the adjuster E. Turn the adjuster
counter-clockwise until the cable is free at
the bracket F.

7. Turn the adjuster E clockwise until the link­

age ju st starts to lower. Turn the adjuster 5%
re vo lutio n s counter-clockwise on 1290,
1390, 1490 and 1690 tractors or 9'A revo­
lu tio ns on 1190 tractors. Hold the adjuster in
this position then tu rn the lock-nut D
counter-clockw ise until it is against the
cable support H.

8. Low er the linkage. Remove the weights. Fit

the to p link.
