Marine Propulsion
New material for use with EALs
With the introduction of regulations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Vessel General Permit (VGP)
requiring vessels to use Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs), it is essential to develop a clear
understanding of the effect on seals and components of switching to such lubricants. A major result of this project is
the launch of Bi-O-Lion® - a new elastomer compound specifically designed for marine propulsion applications where
EALs are in use.
James Walker has been in the business of fluid sealing and control for over 125 years. Throughout our
history we have developed sealing solutions and components in parallel with advances in marine propulsion
technology, developing a detailed knowledge and appreciation of marine propulsion applications and issues
in the process.

We have Bureau Veritas material type approval for
elastomeric lip seals in stern tube sealing applications -
including applications involving Environmentally Acceptable
Lubricants. James Walker products are globally recognised
by marine engineers for their quality and reliability. Today, we
design, manufacture and supply a highly diverse range of
specialised products to the world’s commercial and naval
fleets, as well as to shipyards and original equipment
manufacturers. In addition, we work closely with design
engineers to develop marine equipment sealing products that
can be used with confidence in all areas of maritime activity.
