Building the next generation online skilling and certification model.

Project Brief:

India is the world’s fastest growing economy, expected to grow at 7.2 percent in 2017-18, and at
7.7 percent by 2019-20. The government of India has ambitious plans to transform India into a
competitive, high-growth, high productivity middle-income country. The economy is now
diversifying from being largely agro-based to a manufacturing and service-based
economy. These ambitious plans to transform the Indian economy are highly dependent on the
availability of jobs and the quality of the labor force. This has resulted in an increased demand
for skilled labor over the past few years.

More than 12 million youth between 15 and 29 years of age are expected to enter India’s labor
force every year for the next two decades. The government’s recent skill gap analysis concludes
that by 2022, another 109 million or so skilled worker will be needed in the 24 keys sectors of
the economy.

At present, however, school leavers have few opportunities to acquire job specific skills; only 2.3
percent of India’s workforce has received some formal skills training. To address the issue, skill
development has emerged as a priority sector, and the recently-launched National Skill
Development Mission aims to train approximately 400 million people across the country by
2022.

Skill India is a campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi on 15 July 2015
which aim to train over 40 crore (400 million) people in India in different skills by 2022. It
includes various initiatives of the government like "National Skill Development Mission",
"National Policy for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, 2015", "Pradhan Mantri Kaushal
Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)" and the "Skill Loan scheme".

In the budget of fiscal year 2017 - 18 the government of India has decided to set aside ₹ 17,000
crore, the highest ever allocation to this sector, in order to boost the Skill India Mission. At least
ten million Indian youth enter the country’s workforce each year, but the employment creation
in India has not been able to absorb this influx, making increasing unemployment a severe
problem. Through this allocation the government aims at generating employment and
providing livelihood to the millions of young Indians who enter the work force every year.

Samsung Context:

Samsung is one of the world's leading technology companies, specializing in digital appliances
and media, IT & Mobile products, semiconductors, memory, and system integration. Samsung
Electronics commenced its operations in India in December 1995 and is today a leading provider
of Consumer Electronics, IT and Telecom products in the Indian market. Mobile Phone is the
biggest product category for Samsung and in India, with the highest market share in this
category, by volume and value.
As a leader in Electronics & IT Products, Samsung has been focused through its CSR Programs in
4 key vertical areas:

1. Education
2. Healthcare
3. Skilling
4. Environment & Safety

Under Skilling, Samsung has been working with the Ministry of MSME & Department of
Technical Education in various states to implement Samsung Technical Schools across the
Country. These Centers provides training to skill the youth on repair & service of mobile &
consumer appliance products.

Samsung has also been skilling youth in the state of Telangana in partnership with Telangana
Academy for Skills & Knowledge (TASK) under Samsung Digital Academy Initiative in the Mobile
Apps Development.

To undertake an effort to skill larger number of girls & differently abled, 1000 scholarships have
been announced for the Samsung Technical School Program.

To create a larger reach and realizing the lack of availability of an online skilling & certification
platform, Samsung seeks to create one such platform. This platform is expected to convert
some of the classroom based trainings to an online system.

Project Challenge (Metrics across which participants will be judged)

The main task of the project will be to develop a robust, multi-option skilling & certification
platform, which if proves stable, can be gifted to the Nation.

Some of the other imperatives to be taken care of:

 What are the other skilling initiatives beyond Samsung which can be driven on this
platform or can be localized specifically for India?
 What different mobile technology pieces can be integrated to deliver a simple but robust
platform even for a less educated individual?
