My Career
1. Choose your ideal career, using the “Career Categories” website:
https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/majors-careers
Give the following information:

Career:
Musician

Skills (Are you Ready?):

● Spend long hours practicing.
● Attend regular rehearsals for one or more performance groups.
● Perform solo or as part of an ensemble.
● Work nights and weekends.
● Tour nationally or internationally.

Experience (Make High School Count):

● Play in as many performance groups as you can: try everything from symphonic bands
and chamber orchestras to choirs and a cappella groups.
● Take private music lessons in your instrument. If you need financial aid, look to groups
like the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, which help out young musicians.
● Take music theory classes at school or through a private teacher.
● Attend summer music camps and workshops.

Job Prospect (Outlook):

Government economists expect jobs for musicians and singers to grow about as fast as
the average for all careers through 2020. It’s likely that more people will go to concerts and other
musical performances, so more musicians and singers will be needed. They’ll also be needed to
record for commercials, films, and television. On the other hand, musical groups, such as
orchestras and opera companies, often have a hard time getting funding. This might limit job
growth.

Annual Salary (Compensation):

Median Income of a Musician: $39,899

No education required, but possible majors are next...

Related Majors:
● Composition

My Plan
Return to #1 in Section “My Career”.

1. Determine the Majors you’d like to consider for college.

● Contemporary Writing and Production

● Music Business/ Management
● Music Education

2. Find colleges that have your major.

You may include private or public.
For CSU, use the website:
http://degrees.calstate.edu
For UC schools, use the website:
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/resources/majors/index.html

● Berklee College of Music

3. Choose 2 activities you want to do now to build your experience. Give a description of
how and when you will accomplish these tasks.

Two activities I want to do know to build my experience are continue on with band
practice and learn how to write music far better, and study music theory over the next few years.
I will accomplish continuing on with band practice by getting together with my band as
much as possible, to continue striving. I will also push for playing gigs around town, to better my
understanding of music as a whole, as well as the experience.
I will accomplish studying music theory over the next few years by discussing concepts
within music theory with my guitar teacher. I can practice music theory not only on guitar, but
practice on instruments other than guitar in order to better my understanding, and make my
musical abilities more versatile.
