Recommended Reading List (No. 53)

Naval operations, 1914-1918: general works

This is not a complete bibliography but a selected list of items that

should prove particularly useful and be relatively widely available.
You are welcome to make an appointment to consult them in our
Reading Room, where you can also study our catalogues for further
references. The Reading Room is open between 10am and 5pm
Monday to Friday and the same hours on most Saturdays, although
this is a more limited service.

If you are unable to visit the Reading Room, many items in this list
should be available through the inter-library loan scheme. Your local
public library should be able to provide more details. Please note
that, as a national reference library, our stock is not available for loan.

It may be possible to purchase some of the books in this list but

please note that none is sold by the Department of Printed Books
unless a note to that effect is given. Once books are out of print they
may be difficult to track down and could be expensive. We have a list
of second-hand military book dealers who may be able to locate them.
You could also try www.clique.co.uk on the Web, where you will find
details of over 1,350 British-based dealers and links to an
international database of many millions of second-hand books.

The Department of Printed Books has reprinted some key works for
sale, but these represent only a tiny proportion of the books held in
our library. A catalogue of our publications for sale is available on
request or can be downloaded from our website.

If copyright law and conservation considerations allow, we may be

able to provide photocopies of journal articles or extracts from
published books. Prepayment is required and you will need to
complete our copyright declaration/request form for each item. When
requesting copies, please state in which reading list the item was
found and give full details of the item, including our classification
number if appropriate and the page numbers required.

In addition to Printed Books, the Museum has six other Collecting

Departments – Art, Documents, Exhibits and Firearms, Film & Video,
Photographs and Sound. These may hold further information about
this subject. All can be visited by appointment. A leaflet about the
Collecting Departments is available on request.
