1, PUftPOSS:. This study is an analysis of landing force schemes,
of maneuver to best accomplish the capture, occupation, and initiation
of'base development of the island of KII&ICJA/Its purpose is to aid the
Landing Force Coriander in the preparation of his-detailed plan and to
list possible landing fc ce schames for advance planning considera-

of the terrain.appears in G-2 Estimate, The saddle which crosses the
island oppisite Beach group 1.(Blue^1 and 2) divides the island into the
smaller northern hill mass and the larger southern portion containing the
high (220 meter) hill mass which culminates in a dominating ridge running
parallel to and near the eastern side of the island.; The tactical key
terrain features are: (1) The northern end of the dominating ridge vici-
nity (TA2025-2026). This feature dominates practically the whole north-
ern portion of the island as well as the western and southwestern, parts
of the island. This key feature gives observation on all three groups
of beaches and its possession will yield control over the northern por-
tion of the island and will enable observed fire to be placed on the all
of the southern portion except the extreme southern and southeastern por-
tions.. For the reasons given it is considered to-be a primary land-
ing force objective for all possible schemes of maneuver. (2) The south-
ern end of the dominating ridge, vicinity (TA1823-1923)* This key .feature
dominates .the lower (south) half of the island from East .to West. It pro-
vides direct observation on beach group 2 (Green and Red beaches).. It
is also considered to be an important landing force objective in any
scheme of maneuver. (3) The smaller hill masa (86 meter) in the north-
ern portioruof the island (T42230). This is the key feature of the
smaller northern portion of the island, though it Is itself dominated by
terrain feature (1) described above. It is considered to be-B key in-
termediate objective probably suitable for an RCT. (4) The small hill
mass vicinity (TA1523-1524) i^ southwestern portion of the island. -This
hill mass (71 meters) is itself situated on the western slopes of the
dominating ridge and is overlooked by terrain features both (1) and
(2) described above; however, it is a terrain feature which must be
considered in schemes of maneuver as it provides short range aimed fire
of flat trajectory weapons on the important coastal area around the whole
southwestern bulge of the island.
c
» Airfields. In addition to the critical terrain features
listed above there are two airfields. No.. 1 lies on .the eastern side of
the northern portion of the island between beach groups 1 and 3: Air-"
field No. 2 lies on the north side of the southwestern bulge of the island
in vicinity of beach group 2,• The southwestern bulge of the island
containing airfield No* 2 will probably be the most important area from
a base development viewpoint*

Plan Able: *See Operations Map, Appendix A.
Plan Baker: See Operations Map, Appendix Ai
Plan Charlie: See Operations Map> Appendix A.
6. INFLUENCE OF WEATflER ON SCHEME TO BE ADOPTEDi Southwesterly,
southerly, or southeasterly winds will often persist for 3 or more
days at a time, followed by several days of northerly or northeasterly
winds. Velocities above 20 knots are likely on 1 to 2 days in July.
The maximum velocity is not likely'to exceed 25 knots except during
typhoons. Seas are generally slight during July with long, low swells
from the south, southeast/, northeast, or north. Off both of the two
long sides of the island,;-the flood tidal current sets toward the
southwestj while the ebb. flows in the reverse direction, -velocities are
between 1 and 2 knots. Several.typhoons during July are likely but can
be .generally forecast, a typhoon would affect all landing beaches.
Winds' and swells from ^artheas.t7through east around to southwest adverse
ly affect plans :*ble and Baker. Winds and swells from northeast througr
north around to west adversely affect plan Charlie. Tidal currents
generally have about the'same/affect on all plans. Weather which .
would adversely affect each of the three plans is about equal, with
perhaps a very slight advantage in favor of plan Charlie. "
7. INFLUENCE OF*SUPPORTING -IRKS ';ND SERVICES ON SCHSK5 TO BE
• ADOPTED. , . '

a. Naval Gunfire Support: Naval gunfire support is equally

feasible for all three plans provided' the nearness of VLtAMI on the
western side does not hinder operation of fire support ships on that
side. ' , • : ..;:.-
b. Air-Support: /Sir support..is equally feasible f«r all
three plans.
Field Artillery:. The three plans present approximately
the n artillery point of view.
Supply Beaches and Sup
of the three plans, though supply v:c
landing on the extreme southern
e
» Base Development Considerations: Since practically no base
development can begin until "the entire island is secure,, whichever plan
will most quickly secure the island is the best.
^* Transport Areas: All transport areas and approaches-
require minesweeping. Plans Able and Baker with the transport area on
the eastern side of the1 island affords better protection against suicide
bo.ats from AMAMIj also these two plans afford better radar coverage for
radars in the transport area, as there is no land mask to the east. Plan
Charlie has perhaps a very slight advantage in the matter of boating condi-
tions. While there is some slight danger to shipping in transport areas
on the western side of the island from long range coastal defense 'guns
on AMAMI, the distance between the two islands (18 miles) is such that
this consideration is minor.
•8. INFLUENCE OF ENEMT CAPABILITIES ON SCHEME TO BE ADOPTED:
a. The nearness of AMAMI 0 SHIMA to the western side of the
island presents some disadvantage for plan; Charlie from suicide boats
and coastal guns on AM/'MI, also from a radar protection viewpoint; how-
ever, suicide boat rarige/from AMAMI is very slightly longer to the east-
ern side of the island, and the distance is such that the danger from
coastal guns on AM AMI 0 'SHIM '• is very slight. Small boat reinforcement
from AM -MI 0 SHIMA could be slightly better detected if plan Charlie
is adopted; however, the Narval Forces, advise that once .the operation
starts, a tight screen will prevent any small boat reinforcement.
b* Plan Able hds the•disadvantage of allowing the Jap to defend
across ar narrow frorybage by holding the key terrain feature (1). Alsfc> <,
this terrain feature appears to afford him numerous caves from which he
is difficult to'eject. Plan Able'has the advantage of requiring our
.troops to traverse only a 'short "distance1 to reach the critical terrain
feature (3,) and permits of cdordinated assistance by two RCT*s in its cap-
ture* Plan Baker has practically the same advantages and disadvantages
as 'Plan Able,.except for the added advantage that if weather and beach
Conditions permit, the bringing in of the third RCT on the south at the
appropriate time.'will.result'in considerable advantage by thus striking
the Jap in the rear while he is busily engaged on his main (northern)
front* Plan Charlie has the advantage over "ble and Baker in that our
troops are provided ample maneuver room and the Jap cannot defend on a
narrow frontage. Plan Charlie has the disadvantage that the beach and
approach area is dominated by line of sight observation from both terrain
features 1 and 2^ there is little cover, and the route of approach to
critical objectives is uphill*
9, PREFERRED SCHEME OF MANEUVER. From the above
study of the Operations Map, Appendix A, plan ^b

into effect the subsidiary amphibious landing of the reserve RCT on the
extreme southern shore if and when indicated, as provided in plan
Baker. Plan ,C$krljLe s.. )uld be retained as an alternate plan merely,
to be usec^g^;|u^ conditions or entirely new enemy
dispositioBs^^Mir^t^g ^andonnient of the preferred plan. In this
connection, it i^^b^D*f^tp^postpone the target date for early1
prospect of favorab-U^^Jt&em than
adopt the alternate plan jj^^^M^^WJj&yjQy ^because on the target date
the weather was favorable 'on tn^amfrmial plan beaches and unfavor-
able on the preferred beaches* . ^*$fajr
1®. MIgCEIftfiHEOUS AND CONCLUSION:. In connection with this study
the use of paratroops was thoroughly considered and discarded. The use
of beachjumpsr units was also considered in conference with staff
representatives of the Joint Expeditionary Force Commander and their use
ruled, out. The matter of deception is considered most important. Var-
iations in the "pattern" of air and naval gunfire.preparation heretofore
used for amphibious assaults has been requested of the Joint Expedition-
army Force Commander. It is believed that deception measures should be
.directed toward pointing the assault at AMAMI 0 SHIMA, including the
bulk of all Naval Gunfire and Air preparations prior to the actual
commencement of the preliminaries (Minesweeping and Underwater Demo-
litions) of the operation, and that coincidental with the commencement
of these preliminaries a tight screen should be employed sufficient
to prevent any reinforcement from AMAMI 0 SHIMA or other neighboring
islands. The use of UDT!s is important and vital; however, for decep-
tion purposes, UDT*s should wdrk on all beaches on KIKAIGA in addition
to the selected landing beaches. For planning purposes it is estimated
that under the preferred plan Able, the first objective line will not
be secured in less than 10 days and that the island will not be secured
in less than 30 days. In conclusion, it is desired to emphasize that
this is a study merely that its sole purpose is to aid the Landing
Force Commander in the adoption and preparation of his detailed scheme
of maneuver, and to permit advance planning considerations by the
Navy and other supporting forces. Many variations to the plans pre-
sented may be desirable; additional intelligence may indicate radical
changes.

Support Doctrine, "Amphibious Forces Pacific, and with Operation-
al Directives, Air, Tent>h Army,
2« Continual strikes against enemy air installations
in the Ryukus, Formosa and Japan are being executed by carrier
and land based aircraft in preparation for the assault. No
especial attention is being given to the objective in these
preparatory air strikes in order not to draw the enemy?s
attention to that objective,
5. Tactical Air Force Okinawa is primarily responsible
for direct air support for the operation and for combat air
patrol for all ships at the objective* TAF will furnish dir-
ect support, called strikes, convoy escort, photo missions,
DDT spraying, propaganda drops and air delivery, commensurate
with the overall tactical air situation, •
4. Commander Expeditionary Force has arranged that
Escort carriers will also provide direct air support and such
combat air patrol as practicable. They will assume responsi-
bility for dawn patrol but Tactical Air Force Okinawa will
furnish dusk patrol.
