I was fortunate to have had the privilege of serving as the Camp Nurse for the
week. During that time, I enjoyed making many new young friends and was
touched by how they refused to let their vision impairment define them. Camp
activities included swimming, storytelling, dance class and scavenger hunts. Yet,
some of the most fun I had was being introduced on how to read basic Braille and
how to play a game called Beepball. It’s similar to baseball where the ball and
bases make a beeping noise and there are sighted coaches who pitch and instruct
the players on when and what direction to run. It should be noted that to keep
things fair, all players are blindfolded so that no one with full or residual sight has
any advantage over the other players.

Camp Lighthouse was a heartwarming experience that I will not soon forget and
it was also good reminder of what our fundraising efforts help support. With
that, I strongly encourage anyone interested in giving of their time or other re-
sources toward the Delta Gamma philanthropy of “Service for Sight” to contact
me at vpfoundation@wdcdeltagamma.org.
