3.10 Radio Interference

Radio interference suppression shall comply with or better than, the relevant
sections of B.S. 800.

3.11 Vibration

Engine vibrations shall be classified as follows:

1. Engine unbalance: vibrations resulting from free inertia forces and couples

2. Torque reaction: not a periodic force, but one which may initiate a vibration

3. Cyclical irregularity: is due to the discontinuity in power delivery of piston or

other batch proceeding engines and may force torsional and/or other vibrations.

4. Torsional vibrations in shafting

5. Axial vibrations in shafting

To establish the vibration behavior of the engine, mechanical vibrations above 5Hz
measurable at the surface, at bearings or at fitting points shall be analyzed and
tabulated.

The measurement and evaluation of vibration severity shall be in accordance with

ISO Standard 2954 "Mechanical vibration of rotating and reciprocating machinery-
Requirements for instruments for measuring vibration severity" and ISO Standard
3954, "Mechanical vibration of large rotating machines with speed range greater
than 10 rev/s-Measurement and evaluation of vibration severity in site".

The operating conditions under which the measurements are to be made shall be
defined in the vendor's proposal, and the measuring points and methods to be used
shall be clearly indicated in the proposals. The vendor shall guarantee and test
vibration levels during shop mechanical running tests.

Engine vibrations shall not cause any engine part to be damaged not cause the
fracture of any attached pipe work or electrical connections as well as any part of
coupled generator.

3.12 Noise Level

If specified on the data sheets, noise measurements shall be carried out as

described in the following paragraphs and in accordance with ISO standards as

The noise level shall be measured in dBA and octave bands from 63 Hz to 8 kHz in
accordance with either of the ISO Standard Nos 3744 or 3745 or equivalent national
standards.
If the engine cannot be tested in a test environment satisfying the requirements of
any of the specified standards, the noise level test may, subject to specific written
company approval, be made according to ISO Standard No 3746 or an equivalent
national standard. Octave band readings shall, however, still be made.

The exhaust noise level shall be measured at three positions at 60° intervals one
meter from the edge of the opening. The line joining the measurement position and
the edge of the opening shall from an angle of 60° with the plane of the opening.

When being tested, the diesel engine shall be isolated from extraneous noise such
as:

1. a noisy temporary base excited by engine vibration

2. unsilenced exhaust pipes

If a skid forms part of the equipment, the engine shall be installed on that skid when
tested.

To account for measurement inaccuracies, excess A-weighted sound power levels

up to 2 dB A shall be accepted. Excess octave band levels up to 3 dB shall be
accepted.

Note: Refer to section 7 of IPS-E-EL-100(1) "Engineering Standard for Electrical

System Design" The Max. noise level at 1m away from the machine shall not
exceed 85 db(A) when operating as an alternator at rated voltage, rated
speed at no load.
