Nature - Mark Hamblin Mark Hambilns' page

This photo was taken in Norway, March 2008. This photograph would most
likely be used in a magazine or newspaper article or may be an informative
leaflet about foxes.

The fox is in white snow, the connotation of white would be that it’s pure
colour, one we would associate with ‘goodness’ however the orange
patches on the fox could be a connotation of fire, which could also lead to
being wild, (wildfire-wildlife). By combining the two colours makes the photo
look intriguing and beautiful on a subconscious level. The fox is also staring
at the audience, this tactic is used within this piece of work most likely
because it emphasizes how much of a beautiful animal this breed is. Also
there was snow on his nose which suggests that he is not domesticated
just a wild fox in his natural habitat.
The fox is primarily in the focus because of the subject being placed right in
the middle of the shot. Then there is snow surrounding the fox until a
certain point, which is a line marking where the start of the hill begins; this
show’s field of depth. The trees are also not in focus, this is due to Mark
wanting to make the fox the primary focus of this shot, the trees are less
important compared to the subject.

Mark has used high-key lighting to make the shot look natural and realistic.
Also by brightening the shot it makes the surrounding colours look more
vibrant and pleasing to the eye.

The primary focus is of the fox, this shot showcases and majestic and
beautiful the animal is. The tree bark in the background and the snow in the
foreground isn’t in focus, instead he has blurred it out and made the focus
more of the animal then the surroundings.

The subject of the shot is framed perfectly within the frame, this is to make
the readers look directly at the subject of the image then anything. The shot
is framed slightly downwards from left to right, this is because of how
slanted the actual hill looks like.

The image looks cropped on the left and right sides, this is most likely to fit
the subject in the frame center perfectly in place. He intended to have the
subject in the middle of the frame due to the

The purpose of the image could be used for a magazine article about
wildlife, nature or foxes. This magazine could be a casual read article or a
face paced intriguing information article. Either way it’s a beautiful picture to
use.

Avenue of trees

Who is the photographer, photograph title, year taken.

This photo was captured by Charlie Waite, a British photographer who is
very well known in the photography world, he is known more for his leading
lines photography. This photo is called the ‘Avenue of trees’ and was taken
in Dordogne, France. I couldn’t find the year that it was taken however we
can assume it was taken in the spring/ summer time as there is a lot of
natural light from the sun and there’s brightly green leaves on the trees, this
suggests that the trees just started or mid way through growing their leaves
back.
What medium would the photograph be used in? (newspaper,
magazines etc)
This image would be used within a magazine for promoting France and
promoting the locations that can be visited whilst travelling on holiday in
France. Or it could be used within a magazine promoting nature and
wildlife.

Analyse the photograph, explaining the connotations (MEANS OR

SUGGESTS) symbolic or iconic codes of the following
This image has at least three stable colours, green, brown and a baby blue
tone. Green is the consistent colour in this image, green is a very symbolic
colour as it represents nature, this image has the connotation of green
would be freedom, the audience would feel free and peaceful when viewing
this imagery.

Composition
The composition of the image has a consistency of trees either side of the
main focus point in this image, it’s composed so nicely together that it
makes a perfect rectangle at the end of the image. Also there’s equal
spaced trees and in between the gaps of the trees are more trees, this
creates depth of field and makes the audience feel like they are really
there.

Lighting
Charlie has only used natural lighting in this image, we can tell that he has
only used natural lighting by the angle that the light hits the trees and
leaves, also we can tell because the light from the sun is shining through
the leaves, creating light and shadow marks on the grass.

Focus
The eye would naturally focus on the straight lines. In this image the
audience would focus on the middle part of the image as their are two
leading lines beside it. Also the audience would also focus on the rectangle
shaped end of the image, as this is very straight and looks perfect as it’s
consistent.

Framing
The framing of this image is perfectly placed at the end of the tree avenue
however it’s placed in the middle lane so that it creates leading lines left
and right of the image. This helps contributes to the depth of field and
affects how much of the location is shown within the image.

Cropping
This image is cropped, and has been cropped to help create leading lines,
by cropping each side of image. It’s cropped so that the first trees closest to
the camera is slightly cropped so it emphasises the size comparison
between all trees.

Fitness for purpose

This image is not fit for the purpose because visually, it has a consistency
of colours and has equal spacing, however it doesn’t seem to be promoting
anything, it’s just a visually stunning photo of the woods.

War - Philip Jones Griffiths Philip Jones Griffiths information

Saigon, South Vietnam. 1967.

The focus is primarily on the boys hand, the flame and the coca-cola can.

Who is the photographer, photograph title, year taken.

This image is called ‘conflict’- ‘Vietnam Inc. It was taken by a welsh
photographer, Philip Jones Griffiths, who’s known for his conflict
photography, mostly showcasing how war affected the vietnamese citizens
in 1962. Unfortunately he died in his home on 19th March 2008. This image
was taken in 1967, Saigon, South Vietnam. This image was later published
in 1971.

What medium would the photograph be used in? (newspaper,

magazines etc)
I believe this image would be used within a book, educating people about
war, specifically the vietnam war and the effects it had on families, on the
country and financially. I believe this image was used within a book by

Analyse the photograph, explaining the connotations (symbolic or

iconic codes of the following

The images aim is to make the audience feel bad for this young boy who is
in the frame, this is because there is darkness surrounding the young boy,
so there is no electricity or any light source apart from the match. Also
Philip makes us feel more bad for this young lad by making him light a
match and put it near an old coke can, this is meant to be shocking to the
audience as something we use daily is being used for safety purposes
within the image.

Composition
This image is composed the arrangement of the elements in the image are
placed perfectly in the middle, there is also consistency of spacing around
the subject and the prop (coca cola can).

Lighting
This image is in low-key lighting, this is due to the cameras used back in
that time frame being very outdated, not allowing images to come out in
colour, but instead only black and white. Due to this involuntary colour
choosing, it makes the image feel more dark than it already is. The only
lighting used is from the match lit in the image, we can tell this by the
shadows that are created and the brightness surrounding the lit match.

Focus
The main focus point is the match as that is the lightest part of the image,
and it is placed in the centre of the image. Then the eye should travel to
either the boys hand or the coke can, this is because it is the second
lightest park to the image. Then lastly, the focus should be shifted to the
boys face. Philip flips the focus on it’s head as usually the eye travels to the
biggest space, however the space is black instead, because of this the eye
will travel to the lightest side of the image.

Framing
The framing of this image is levelled, we can tell that the photographer
used a tripod because of the framing. It has also been framed so the main
focus point is in the middle of the image, this is because of how much
space the elements have from the edge of the image.

Cropping
This image doesn’t look like it has been cropped much, however it depends
on how much space was originally accounted for in the unedited image.
Also, technology didn’t really exists back in this time frame so it might have
not been cropped.

Fitness for purpose

I believe this image is perfect for its purpose as the purpose of this image is
to show how bad the Vietnamese war was on the citizens and families who
lived in vietnam, and clearly the image stirs certain emotions in the
audience.
