The future of air movement lies

with Rexroth hydrostatic fan drives
The word ventilator is derived from the Latin “ventulus”, which translates as a “gentle wind”. There is little connection bet-
ween this notion and modern hydrostatic fan drives from Rexroth. Their task is to create controlled air movement to draw
off the heat from the internal combustion engine as it hits the radiator. They thus ensure optimum engine and combustion
temperatures. Intelligently controlled fan systems thus help to meet the ever-stricter emission regulations worldwide.
And Rexroth hydrostatic fan drives save energy. How? Controlled by highly sophisticated sensors, they provide cooling in
dependence on the measured temperature. Not more, but not less either. Hydrostatic fan drives thus help to reduce operating
costs permanently, no matter what vehicles are concerned - buses, wheel loaders, excavators, rail vehicles, combine harvesters,
dump trucks or mobile cranes …

From sensors and controllers to pumps and motors, Rexroth offers the right fan concept for a wide variety of applications.

4 Less Emission

Optimum combustion temperature

for a cleaner environment
Environmental protection has gained in importance even in the area of utility vehicles. Exhaust gas standards have generally
become more stringent worldwide during the last few years. In almost all industrialized countries, binding emission limit
levels are now in force, for example for carbon monoxide and dioxide, for sulfur and nitrogen oxides, for dust and soot.
To comply with legal emission limits, keeping the combustion temperature of the engine at an optimum level is not enough
by itself. Additional processes or systems are called for, such as cooled exhaust gas recirculation or multi-stage turbocharging.
Thus, depending on the medium to be cooled, the required cooling capacity may increase by 15 to 40 percent (related to the
change-over from Euro 4 to Euro 6 emission standards). This results in about 20 percent higher space requirements for the
radiator. Rexroth hydrostatic fan drives compensate for these changed conditions and play a significant role in modern engine
development.

■ Existing (more stringent) regulations in industrialized nations

■ Stricter regulations expected for the next 5 years
■ Stricter regulations expected for the next 10 years

The world is moving closer together in terms of environmental protection

Regulations and directives governing the emission of pollutants from diesel engines are in force in many
industrialized nations. And further tightening of limit levels has been decided or is planned for the next few
years. Experts anticipate that similar regulations and standards will be globally enforced with some delay.
Thus the world will move closer together in terms of environmental protection.

For engine manufacturers, the challenge in meeting the standards is to reduce peak combustion temperatures,
while further reducing the particle content of the exhaust gas.

Rexroth hydrostatic fan drives make sure that the combustion process takes place at the optimum temperature –
at all times.

6 Lower Cost

Hydrostatic fan drives:

Controlled air movement pays
Judging soberly from a technical point of view, ventilation is an ungrateful business, for it means spending energy on energy
that has already been consumed. The engine and combustion temperatures must be kept at the right levels. This is done by
efficiently removing the dissipated heat − a process that consumes energy and produces costs.
With hydrostatic fan drives, this process can be closely controlled, as the cooling performance is strictly linked to the measured
temperatures. Compared to continuous fan operation, this saves much energy. In terms of numbers: up to 5 percent savings in
fuel cost!

Continuously variable fan power – independence of engine speed

-HUKPHNYHT There is a sensible way of saving energy: Using only the amount of
energy that is needed to achieve a desired condition. This calls,
first and foremost, for flexibility. That is why Rexroth hydrostatic fan
drives provide continuously variable power, depending on how
much cooling is desired at any given time. The temperature is kept
constant independently of the engine speed. Sensors measure the
temperatures and control the fan performance.

7YLZZ\YLWBIHYD

This guarantees that the hydrostatic fan drives consume only the
amount of energy that is actually required. This reduces the impact

on the environment and saves operating costs compared to con-
ventional fan systems.

Flexible equipment assembly – more latitude in engine development

There is a limit to development in engine technology: the engine

compartment. Rexroth hydrostatic fan drives give design engineers
great latitude – within the bounds of the space available – in arran-
ging the fan system and all its components. Hydraulic pumps,
tubes, controllers and the radiator can simply be put where there is
free space – the available space is efficiently utilized. This flexibility
is a major advantage compared to direct drives using belts or drive
shafts. For example, a roof cooling system of the type planned and
already in use on modern buses is thus possible to realize only
using hydrostatic fan drives.

Thanks to this latitude, design and development engineers can

focus all their attention on what is really essential: the engine and
its performance.

8 Fan Drive Variants

Rexroth hydrostatic fan drives come in 2 x 2 variants

Rexroth hydrostatic fan drives are available in four different variants. For one thing, the fan drive can be hydraulically or
electrically controlled. For another thing, the fan can be driven by a fixed or variable system.
Which hydrostatic fan drive variant is the right one for you depends largely on how many operating temperatures need to
be monitored and controlled – and on the engine power, of course. But there is one thing that we guarantee in any case:
The design and development engineers of Rexroth will support you in making the right choices from the outset of your project.

The first choice to be made: The second choice to be made:

Hydro-mechanically or electro-hydraulically controlled fan drive? Constant gear pump or variable axial-piston pump?

The hydro-mechanical fan control system is used for relatively simple The fixed gear pump is used for small to medium fan drive powers (of up

temperature sensors superfluous.

of construction and agricultural machines. To
prevent the cooling performance from deteriora-
ting, engineers have come with a smart solution –
the reversing operation. The fan rotor direction of
rotation is changed at defined intervals, so that
air is blown in the opposite direction, carrying
the dirt outside. The advantage of the reversing
operation is obvious. The radiator remains
unobstructed and the engine operates at ideal
engine and combustion temperatures.

There are times when a fan is not needed: The standstill option

With the optional standstill feature, the fan rotor

is completely shut down during the start-up
phase or when ambient temperatures are very
low. Thus the internal combustion engine
reaches its operating temperature faster and the
exhaust gas pollutants are optimally reduced.
Moreover, the consumption-optimized standstill
feature permits fuel savings of up to 1 percent
compared to conventional fan standstill solutions.

Hydrostatic fan drives with a variable pump:

Less energy consumption and thus less emission
The comparison between a fan drive featuring
a fixed pump and a system with a variable pump
shows, in the case of a city bus: Fan drives with
variable pumps consume less energy and thus
reduce operating costs in the long term.

16 Rexroth Application Centers

The future of hydrostatic fan drives begins

at the Rexroth Application Center
Consultancy is Rexroth’s strength. This competence is a major benefit when it comes to
planning complex systems comprising a multitude of components. The wellspring of
this strength lies in Rexroth’s Application Centers. There we develop, in partnership with
our customers, new, application-oriented system solutions.

The Application Centers: Developing today for tomorrow

The future is built today. In this process, Rexroth’s Application Centers play a vital role. Their task is to analyze
current and future customer requirements in the area of drive and control systems and to develop appropriate
solutions – for single components and complete systems.

System solutions from Rexroth: Perfectly matched fan components

A few key words suffice to describe the future requirements for vehicles and machines: more power, faster availa-
bility, less emission and last, but not least, lower operating cost. To translate these key words into reality, we make
sure that the Fan Drive Application Center has comprehensive engineering Know-how, modern simulation pro-
grams and optimum test systems at its disposal. In close cooperation with our customers and partners and with a
minimum of interfaces, we develop complete, operational system solutions with perfectly matched components.

Taking a look at the Application Center: The future of the hydrostatic fan drive

Hydrostatic fan drives from Rexroth are constantly being improved, refined and optimized. At the heart of these acti-
vities is the question: What objectives can be accomplished with a hydrostatic fan drive? At Rexroth, developments
are already underway which aim at combining the hydrostatic fan drive with additional features, such as the climate
compressor, the air compressor and similar features. Such combined systems can be easily implemented using the
BODAS electronics management system.

The objective: New combinations for further energy savings and better environmental compatibility

The advantages of these new combinations are optimum weight distribution and economical use of the engine
compartment. Ultimately, this will pay off in energy savings and environmental benefits and last, but not least, in
lower operating cost. By pursuing these developments, we are laying the basis for our future success.

New emission legislation:

Hydrostatic fan drives play a significant role
In order to comply with today’s exhaust and emission legislation, vehicle manufacturers are increasingly focusing on alternative
drive technologies, such as exhaust-gas-optimized diesel engines with particulate filters or engines driven by natural gas, liquid
gas or ethanol. In addition, fuel-cell drives and hydrogen combustion engines as well as hybrid drive systems are being develo-
ped. Regardless of these activities, the task of the fan drive remains unchanged: to provide the required cooling performance
for modern drive technologies. And it should perform this task in the most consumption-efficient manner. A hydrostatic fan
drive with a modern control system and a variable pump meets both these requirements.
