GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
1.0 SCOPE
2.1 Vendor shall meet or exceed the requirements of the latest edition of the following
codes, regulations and standards, except as superseded herein. In cases where
more than one code, regulation or standard apply to the same condition, the most
stringent shall be followed. In the event of a conflict between this specification and
other specifications or correspondence, the OWNER shall be consulted and a
ruling, in writing, shall be obtained before any work is started.
2.3 Any deviation from this specification must be approved, in writing, by OWNER.
Such written approval must be obtained prior to the commencement of any work
which would constitute such a deviation.

3.0 GENERAL
4.0 DESIGN
4.1 General
4.1.1 Motors shall be designed and constructed in accordance with the requirements of
IEC 34, or as modified by this specification.
4.1.3 When a reduced voltage starting method is used, the Vendor shall ensure that
the motor provides adequate torque to accelerate the load. The Vendor of the
driven equipment shall furnish to the OWNER a full description of the starting
requirements and characteristics of the load (in particular, a speed-torque curve
or tabulation).
4.1.4 Efficiency shall be evaluated on the basis that a reduction in operating losses will
support an additional capital cost. An amount representing the additional capital
cost that can be supported by a reduction in operating losses of one kilowatt shall
be provided on the Small Motor Data Sheet in Appendix A, or on the requisition,
or shall be supplied by the OWNER on request. Evaluations will be made on
minimum guaranteed efficiency at full load.
4.1.6 Motors in Zone 2 areas shall not arc or spark nor produce ignition capable hot
spots or surfaces. The design of the motor shall be in accordance with the
requirements of IEC 75-15. Under normal operating conditions the temperature
of any internal or external surfaces which may be exposed to explosive
atmosphere shall not exceed the temperature limit of temperature group T3.
4.1.7 Motors in Zone 1 areas shall be suitable for equipment group IIB and temperature
group T3. Acceptable types of protection, in order of preference shall be:
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
4.1.8 Anti-friction bearings shall have a minimum L-10 life expectancy of 50,000 hours
as defined by the Anti-Friction Bearing Manufacturers’ Association.
4.1.11 Sound power levels shall meet the requirements of ISO 1680, unless otherwise
specified.
4.1.12 When it is indicated on the Data Sheet that the motor will be supplied from a
variable frequency drive (VFD), the requirements listed below shall be met, in
addition to the other requirements of this specification:
• Frequency range shall be 0-50 Hz, unless otherwise specified on the Data
Sheet. Load torque characteristics are described in the Data Sheet.
• The Vendor shall include with the bid a description of special manufacturing
processes or tests for motors driven by VFD’s.
4.2.1 Solid shaft motors shall be provided unless otherwise approved by OWNER.
Hollow shaft motors, when approved, shall be fitted with a non-reverse
mechanism to protect against reverse rotation damage.
4.2.2 Vertical motors for in-line pump drives shall be “in-line” type motors.
4.2.3 Vertical motors shall be equipped with a spray shield or be designed to prevent
the direct entrance of liquids that might be released by a pump seal failure. Shaft
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
seals shall also prevent seal leak material from entering both the top and bottom
bearing housing and/or the motor interior.
4.2.4 Thrust bearings in vertical motors shall be designed to carry any up or down
thrust that the driven equipment may impose during the start-up or operation at
any capacity including shut-off. This is in addition to the required capacity to
support the motor and driven equipment rotors.
4.2.5 The use of multiple bearings (stacked bearings) in vertical motors is acceptable
only as an added safety feature. Regardless of the number of bearings used, the
total thrust load shall not exceed the maximum rated capacity of a single bearing.
4.2.7 Vertical motors shall have the following lubrication unless otherwise indicated on
the Data Sheet:
Any deviation from this specification requires prior written acceptance from
OWNER.
5.0 ACCESSORIES
5.1 Motors rated15 kW and larger shall be equipped with at least one PTC (Positive
Temperature Coefficient) thermistor per phase connected in series for winding
over-temperature protection.
5.2 Space heaters shall be supplied when specified. They shall be sufficient to raise
the winding average temperature by 4ºC.
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
6.0 TESTING
6.2 When specified, motors shall receive the routine tests plus additional tests as
indicated on the Data Sheet.
6.3 Testing shall follow the methods as stated in the relevant IEC or ISO
recommendations.
7.1 For each motor covered by this specification, a certified dimensional outline
drawing and completed Data Sheet shall be submitted to the OWNER. The
Vendor’s data sheet will be accepted providing it contains the same information.
When specified in the Data Sheet, the Vendor shall supply the OWNER with
motor thermal damage curves, after receipt of Purchase Order.
