Carnegie Mellon University

In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the Carnegie Technical Schools were founded in 1900 by

Andrew Carnegie, and in 1912 became the Carnegie institute of Technology. In 1967, it merged

with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to form Carnegie Mellon University.

Carnegie Mellon University’s main campus spans 140 acres in downtown Pittsburgh.

They also have secondary campuses in Silicon Valley and Qatar. The co-ed private school has

the same tuition costs for domestic and out-of-state students at $52,310. 24% of applicants to

CMU are admitted, with the average GPA of admitted humans being 3.76. The average SAT

score admitted is 1490. The average ACT score of admitted people is a 32.

There are seven colleges within CMU. They are: College of Engineering, College of Fine

Arts, Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Information Systems, Mellon College of

Science, College of Computer Science and the Tepper School of Business. Together these

colleges offer 90 programs and majors for students to chose from.

Surrounding the main campus is downtown Pittsburgh, with many museums, stores,

restaurants, and all other activities and things to do. People who don’t want to leave the

campus, however, can choose to engage in activities on campus. One can choose to play tennis

in one of the courts, take a stroll through one of the parks and greenways, or chill out in the

library.
Carnegie Mellon University leverages its high tuition prices with grants for people who

prove that they are unable to pay for financial reasons. CMU also recognizes the Presidential

Scholarship and the Carnegie Scholarship. These are handed out to students with high academic

and artistic performance along with demonstrated leadership and community involvement. To

be even considered for either, students must fill out a FAFSA form and a CSS profile. Also, ROTC

scholarships are available to qualified students.

The job placement rate for the 61 Master’s degree graduates in Computer Science in the

School of Computer Science, 42 had immediate job placement with a median salary of $110K,

and 9 continued their education. Out of the 41 Master’s degree graduates in Biotechnology at

the School of Computer Science, 41 found immediate job placement. The average salary of

these graduates was around $115K, with the highest being around $153K.

Carnegie Mellon University has over 280 student-led organizations and extracurricular

activities from athletic programs to some that are more academically centered. CMU’s 19 third-

division sports programs allow even athletically leaning students to enjoy themselves. Once a

year there is also a sweepstakes racing program in which sororities and fraternities build small,

fast buggies with people inside that roll around a course at high speeds.

The university has its own dormitories on-campus where students can live with other

students, fostering independence. Their housing office is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 am

to 5:00 pm. Those are all of the things I could gather from their website. There are ATMS

available at public areas throughout the campus for students to use to withdraw money.
Carnegie Mellon has multiple meal plans available for students, varying from the yellow

plan at less than $3K per year, but offers one meal a day, to the green plan, which costs near

$6.5K but allows more than 2.5 meals a day every two weeks, with extra flexible meal money,

in addition to two guest meals. These plans are valid at more than 34 on-campus locations

providing cuisines from all over the globe.
