Solve a World Problem:
Global Warming

What is Global Warming?
Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in the earth’s surface temperature.
Earth has gone through climate change without the help of humans before, but
now it is occurring more rapidly because of human activities.
What are the Causes?
Scientists agree the main cause of global warming is the greenhouse effect. This
is when heat being released from earth is being trapped by greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere.
Greenhouse Gases
The Greenhouse Gases that are trapping heat are:

● Water vapor
● Carbon dioxide (Co2)
● Methane
● Nitrous oxide
● Chlorofluorocarbons
What are the Effects?

More droughts and heat waves

Stronger Hurricanes

Arctic Will be ice free

Temperatures will continue to rise

Changes in precipitation patterns

Where is the Evidence?

Global temperature rise

Warming oceans

Shrinking ice sheets

Extreme events
Decreased snow cover
Sea level rise

Declining Arctic sea ice

How Trees Help
Trees help deal with
global warming by
turning CO2 into
oxygen using
photosynthesis. CO2
is the most common
greenhouse gases
that comes from
human activity.
Photosynthesis
We are using trees so we can turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. This process is
called photosynthesis. Plants use photosynthesis to make food by using sunlight
and carbon dioxide to create a sugar which it uses as energy to grow and
reproduce.
Tree Species that Best Produce Oxygen

The best producers of oxygen are leafy trees:

● Oaks
● Aspens
● Redwoods

Also it is known that a tree produces higher volumes of air when growing than
when mature.
What We Chose and Why
The tree we chose is the Coast Redwood. Since the idea is to start planting a
grove in Novato, the coast redwood would be a good choice.

Why?

● It is native to northern California

● It takes in a lot of CO2 and makes it into oxygen
● Easy to grow and maintain
Where to plant the trees
1.The trees need shade to grow

2.They need to grow on the north side of hills and mountains

3.Most of Novato already has trees

4.Some spots have areas with shade but no trees

How We Can Help Novato
Our plan is to plant Coast Redwoods near San Marin on a solar farm.
The area of where that coastal trees is be about 60,000 square feet.
Number of Trees

The most trees we can put is 4000 because:

● Each tree has a diameter of 10-15 feet

● Each tree can be 5 feet apart from each other and still grow fine
Cost to Make Possible
● Price of one coast redwood sapling at lowes: $19.98
● 4000 saplings: $79,920

Total Cost: $79,920
