Introduction
Advanced Listening requires students to be committed to the importance of listening skill as a critical
factor in improving personal communication. It also connects critical thinking, language skills, and
learning outcomes. There appears a main constraint in this process of human communication which is that
even though everyone likes to think they are good listeners, they hear but do not listen. After a learner
understands what is meant by being a good listener, s/he will feel motivated to develop this skill and
improve their communication skills to prepare students for academic success, as well. In other words, an
understanding of the human communication process will enable the students to appreciate the role that
listening plays in this process and the consequences of ineffective listening.

Didactic orientation
The main focus of this subject is to develop this skill and apply note-taking strategies which focus the
students’ attention on the accurate and concise recording of material delivered during the process.
Effective note-taking is the cornerstone of effective studying.

The listening material includes several types of spoken English: general informational material, which
students use to perform specific tasks; conversations (in the form of interviews); and academic lectures.
These three types of discourse appear in each of the book´s ten chapters. Working through the chapters,
students do a wide variety of listening tasks, including listening for main and specific ideas, following
directions, and completing summaries and outlines. A major focus is put on helping students learn note-
taking – an essential academic skill.

Take into account that at the end of the academic semester you are going to have an FCE exam so it is
recommended to practice this kind of exams, too

Do not scan the book, please. Type the questions and only the correct answers. You do not need to type
the incorrect answers.
