Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

Greetings of peace.

The readings this week lend themselves to some reflection on our vocational call. God has a plan for
every one of us. To what degree are you doing what you God wants you to do? Is God still calling us to
do what we have always done, or is there some new opportunity on the horizon for us?

When my mother was in her early 90’s, she looked at me one day and said, “I don’t know what I’m
supposed to be doing.” The statement was poignant and a little bit sad for me. She followed that up with
another statement of bewilderment, “I don’t understand why I’ve lived this long.” She was quite limited
physically at the time, but still had her wits about her. In listening to her talk, I was pretty much rendered
speechless. I had relied on my mother for decades for sound advice. She always knew who she was and
the best way to handle every situation. Really, now, with all of that cumulative wisdom, she was
experiencing confusion about how to go forward?

In many ways we become like children as we get older; we simply need help in doing basic things. It
stunned me a bit to think that “vocational discernment” would also be included as one of those areas in
which we might regress! Experiencing these kinds of events is a reminder of our dependence on God and
one another. We’re not as independent or as isolated as we sometimes think.

May we continue to grow in our love of God and one another in the coming week.

A Message from
Sister Lisa Marie Valentini, MSC
Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Mission Appeals 2017
Dear Worshippers,

I hope that this New Year is off to a good start for you. If time is passing a little too quickly for you, know that you are
not alone: This weekend is the Mission Co-Op Appeal for 2017! My Mission work made it impossible for me to
complete my appeals before the calendar year ended, but I am happy to be here with you today. Each Sunday as we
celebrate and participate in the Eucharist, we are reminded of God’s great love, which He showed to us by sending His
Son, Jesus, to save us. “For this heart you are in the world.” is the message that Father Linckens, the founder of the
Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, gave to his MSC Sisters when they came as Missionaries to the
USA over 100 years ago. It is this heart of Jesus, so full of love and mercy, that God uses the Missionary Sisters to help
people to come to know and experience first-hand. I remind you that we, too, are called to spread the Good News of
God’s Love – and I am inviting you to share in the work that the MSC Sisters have been doing and continue to do in 21
countries throughout the world. There are two ways of being Missionary: One is to GIVE by GOING – which is what my
Sisters and I do. . . the other is to GO by GIVING --. . . This weekend we have the opportunity to “GIVE” so that we can
truly be a part of the Missionary work of the Sisters. Please be generous in today’s second collection – and may you
support the Sisters during this New Year of 2018 with your prayer, too!

God bless you!

INTRODUCTION TO CENTERING PRAYER

Saturday, January 27th from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm
Love is our deepest nature, and consciously or unconsciously, each of us searches for that love.
For Christians, God is the ultimate object of our longing. Centering Prayer provides a simple “how to” method of prayer for
achieving intimacy with God- our deepest longing. Centering Prayer is a way of bringing the contemplative teachings of the
spiritual masters of the Christian tradition into contemporary times.
Centering Prayer does not seek anything for itself or involve judging how one is doing. It does not require concentration, mind
control, or efforts to make the mind blank. It calls for a most gentle letting go of everything, including our thoughts and emotions,
in order to be present to God. It is a total giving of oneself to God in silence without asking for anything back. The openness of
our being, in response to God’s invitation to seek him, allows time and space for God’s presence to manifest and for intimacy to
develop. This intimacy fosters a continual loving submission of the self to God’s will and personal transformation in Christ.
Centering Prayer is both a method and a prayer at the same time. The prayer is consenting to God’s presence and action within.
“Be it done unto me according to Thy will”. Centering Prayer is based on the wisdom saying of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount:
“…but when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret,
will reward you.” (MT 6:6)
Anyone interested in learning about centering prayer with no previous knowledge or experience or has an interest in going deeper is
cordially invited to join in a presentation and prayer session on Saturday, January 27th from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm (meet in the
Shrine lobby). No charge and all are welcome. For more information, please contact: Nancy Nichols Kearns at
