QUADRILATERAL

A quadrilateral is a closed figure with four straight

sides. You can make a quadrilateral by taking (or
imagining) anything straight and thin you might have
handy: pens, toothpicks, chopsticks, etc. A square is
one type of a special quadrilateral.

FAMILY OF QUADRILATERAL

Kite: A quadrilateral in which two disjoint pairs of

consecutive sides are congruent (“disjoint pairs” means
that one side can’t be used in both pairs).

Parallelogram: A quadrilateral that has two

pairs of parallel sides.

Rhombus: A quadrilateral with four congruent

sides; a rhombus is both a kite and a
parallelogram.

Rectangle: A quadrilateral with four right angles; a

rectangle is a type of parallelogram.
Square: A quadrilateral with four congruent sides and
four right angles; a square is both a rhombus and a
rectangle.

Trapezoid: A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of

parallel sides (the parallel sides are called bases).

Isosceles trapezoid: A trapezoid in

which the nonparallel sides (the legs)
are congruent

PROPERTIES

Square

• A square is a regular quadrilateral.

• All angles are equal (90°).

• All sides are of equal length.

• Opposite sides are parallel.

• The diagonals bisect each other at 90°.

• The diagonals are equal in length.

Rhombus

• Diagonally opposite angles are equal.

• All sides are of equal lengths.

• Opposite sides are parallel.

• The diagonals bisect each other at 90°.

Rectangle

• All angles are equal (90°).

• Opposite sides are of equal length.

• The diagonals are equal in length.

Trapezium

• One pair of opposite sides is parallel.

Kite

• Two pairs of sides are of equal length.

• One pair of diagonally opposite angles is equal.

• Only one diagonal is bisected by the other.

• The diagonals cross at 90°.

Here are the things to remember

All quadrilaterals have 4 sides

A square has got 4 sides of equal length and 4 right angles (right angle = 90 degrees).

A Rhombus has got 4 sides of equal length and opposite sides are parallel and angles are
equal.

The rectangle (oblong) contains 4 right angles (an angle of 90˚). It has got 2 pairs of equal
length sides

A parallelogram is a rectangle that has been pushed over. Opposite sides are the same length
and they are parrallel.

A trapezium as got one pair of parallel sides.

A kite as got two pairs of sides next to each other that have equal length.
