Syllabus Global Strategic Management

Prof. Marcel Duhaneanu, Ph.D.

I. Course description

This course studies the formulation of corporate responses to the international

environment. Emphasis is on understanding international economic forces and national
and international policies affecting trade and investment. Executives operating in
economies in transition face challenges not only on their domestic market but also in an
increasingly global environment in which businesses must compete. In a global
economy, this means that managers need to know how to compete in most industries
that have become increasingly global and how to develop a global vision and an
organization that can operate efficiently.

To analyze the key elements in the current and future business environment we
will use the conceptual overview of the Environmental Analysis Framework (EAF).

II. Class preparation

Students are expected to read, understand and analyze the materials indicated for
each session. Students should be active in discussing the subjects and cases mentioned
in the course outline, being prepared to challenge each other’s opinions and
assumptions.

III. Determinants of course grades:

Class participation {60% of final grade}

After each class session, both the quality and quantity of individual student’s
contributions will be recorded. Obviously, attendance is a prerequisite for participation
points and some responsibility rests upon each student to demonstrate their familiarity
with the readings and preparation of the classes.

Quizzes {10% of final grade}

Quizzes may be given at the beginning of class solely for the purpose of
measuring student`s familiarity with the assigned readings. Such quizzes may not be
made up and imposes a burden on each student to be in class on time.

Exam {30% of final grade}

The exam will be written and the grade scale is between 1 and 10. For those who
are graded less than 6 can take the exam only once.

IV. General requirements

The students are not allowed to be absent more than 30% of class hours. Those
who are absent (motivated) can take the exam only once. The extra hours of consulting
are to be announced after the academic year starts.
