Assignment 1 (10%)

All the question are to be done in a group of at most 5 and at least 3.

Please hand in for the Mentor at your respective Node by 10 May 2011.
Attempt each of the following problems and write down your solutions with
all the necessary steps for each of the questions as neatly as possible. Please
note that unreadable answers may not be corrected.

1. Let A =  0 1 + 2i 2 .
0 0 1 − 2i

(a) Find all the eigenvalues A.

(b) Find all the eigenvectors of A corresponding to each the eigenvalues you found
in (a) above.

2. An elastic membrane in the xy-plane with boundary circle x2 + y 2 = 1 is stretched

so that a point P = (x1 , y1 ) goes over into the point Q = (x2 , y2 ) (with corre-
sponding position vectors denoted by X and Y respectively) given by

t 5 3 x1
Y = (x2 , y2 ) = AX = .
3 5 y1

Find the principal directions, that is, the directions of the position vectors X of P
for which the direction of the position vector Y of Q is the same or exactly opposite.
What shape does the boundary circle take under this deformation?

found in (a) above.
(c) Determine the algebraic and geometric multiplicities of each of the eigenvalues
found in (a) above.
