Line of Force, Auroville

Mixed-usage Development
Introduction:
Auroville, the universal township is divided into four major zones residential, cultural,
international & economic zones with matrimandir, peace zone in the middle. The
division line between these zones are blurred by four major curved zones known as lines
of forces. It’s a rectangular strip of approximately 1.5 km x 300 m. It gradually raises
from GF till 8 stories height. Through their gradual curvature and raise in the height they
provide visual dynamism to the city scape. They mainly comprise of residential units,
commercial spaces, recreational spaces, office spaces & industrial. They basically serve
the people who work in the nearby region of 400 to 500m radii.
Brief:
Auroville city planning was done on the concept of decentralizing & localizing the
residential, services and workplace of the people so as to reduce the travel distance and
promote eco-life. So these lines of forces act mixed usage spaces catering to the local
needs of housing, services, amenities, commercial, recreational, administrative offices &
small-scale eco industries.
I am considering strip between economic and cultural zone. The users’ spectrum will
vary between industrial & cultural zone employees, tourists, volunteers, college
students and research peoples. These people will have all the required services,
amenities and work area within the walkable distance. Generally, office spaces would
located towards the crown zone followed by residential, commercial, recreational
spaces and finally disintegrates into small scale factories towards the green belt. By
concept it is a single building with sufficient amount of porosity and open spaces for to
and fro traffic between the zones.
Objective:
 To understand the complex interaction between different zones and activities
 To have sufficient amount of porosity and open spaces for communal activities
and interaction
 Energy efficiency, sustainable & eco-life
