Abutments

The exercise is based on the theory from the “Presentation – design of abutments”

Question 1
See the basic model B2 – slide 8-10
Given:
Concrete C30, γc=1,40
Reinforcement fyd = 458 MPa.
Beam bxh = 250x700 mm.
Coverage prescribed c = 20 mm
Vertical stirrups ø8 mm.
Horizontal U-stirrup Ø16 mm

a) Make a clear hand sketch of the abutment in scale 1:10 including and elevation and a plan
section.

b) Determine the anchorage capacity “2T on slide 9” of a U-stirrup placed with center 52mm from
the bottom of the beam. The bending diameter is the maximum possible.

c) As the tensile force in the reinforcement is T= ½ Vcotθ, what is the maximum shear force that
the beam can resist at the abutment if 1) cotθ = 1 or 2) cotθ = 2,5

Question 2
See basic model D
Beam bxh = 200x1000 mm.
The bearing plate with the reaction is 100x200 mm and the rear end is 70 mm from the beam end.
There are 9 pieces of horizontal stirrups ø8 mm .
Cotθ= 2 is used.

Given:
Concrete C30, γc=1,40
Reinforcement fyd = 458 MPa.

a) Draw a clear hand sketch in scale 1:10 of the abutment

b) Determine the maximum value of the reaction R that can be transferred to the abutment
c) Check that the vertical concrete stress in the abutment is smaller than fcd.
d) Check if the concrete stress  in the inclined struts is acceptable.
c
.
Use the normal expressions for shear  c   Ed (tan   cot  ) and check if    f
c  cd

Question 3
The beam from question 2 is now a transverse beam which is supported on a main beam with the
same cross sectional dimensions.

 Make a clear hand sketch in scale 1:10 of this situation including all reinforcement. You draw
the longitudinal reinforcement in principle ( e.g. Ø16 mm bars).
The sketch must include:
o an elevation of the transverse beam/cross section of the main beam
o a plan sketch
