Question 4

Read the article on water conservation.

Residents in several states in Malaysia no longer need to suffer the inconvenience of water
rationing beginning today. The rationing exercise would end today due to the increase of water
level in the dam. Although the water rationing is over, the crisis persists. Hence, water
conservation is still very important.
Residents are advised not to waste water or water rationing will be back quicker than they
know it. There are some simple ways to conserve water that will benefit you and those in your
community, now and in the future.
One of the ways to conserve water is by harvesting rainwater. The accumulation and storage
of rainwater can help you to reduce your dependence on water mains. Besides that, you do not
need to water your lawn during the current wet spell. Avoid using a hose to wash cars or clean the
porch.
Do you know that a lot of water that is wasted on a day-to-day basis is caused by the overuse
of washing machines? In order to reduce the problem, avoid putting half a load of washing into
the machine. Instead, set a day for laundry and make sure you put a full load of dirty washing to
maximise water usage.
Besides that, you should fix leaks in taps or in the household plumbing system. Little drops of
water can add up to a big amount of wastage. Even taking shorter showers will save gallons of
water each year. Encourage others in your household to take shorter showers as well. Do not flush
the toilet unnecessarily. Lastly, for those who own a dishwasher at home, use it only when it is
loaded to its full capacity. This practice can save hundreds of gallons of water each month and
lower your monthly bill too.
Get into the habit of conserving water. Everyone in the family should be aware of its
importance. Parents are encouraged to spend some time teaching their children some of the simple
water-saving methods around the home which can make a big difference.

What is Red?

With all your might. A circus cart.
Red is a sunburn Red is a lipstick
A spot on your nose. Red is a shout
Sometimes red, is a red red rose. Red is a signal
Red squiggles out when you cut your hand. That says, “Watch out!”
Red is a brick Red is a great big
And the sounds of a band. Rubber ball.
Red is hotness Red is the giant-est
You get inside Colour of all.
When you’re embarrassed Red is a show-off,
And want to hide. No doubt about it –
Fire-cracker, fire-engine But can you imagine
Fire-flicker red – Living without it?
And when you’re angry
Red runs through your head.

Assessment Objectives
This part assesses the student’s ability to:
 write a report based on the given notes using correct and appropriate language.
 add more information, opinions and elaborate ideas.
 write using coherent and cohesive structures to convey meaning effectively.
A. How writing is assessed
In the assessment of writing skills at the lower secondary school level, the student is assessed on
his/her ability to demonstrate the following skills in his/her written responses:
 reading skills in understanding the rubric and fulfilling the requirements of the writing task.

 thinking skills to reflect depth and maturity of thinking by giving ideas, reasons and supporting
them with appropriate elaboration.

 language skills in terms of using language appropriately to provide the correct tone, form and

of language in terms of grammar, sentence structure and mechanics of writing is essential for effective

in the assessment of writing.
B. What is expected of a student
A student must at least be able to:
 identify the requirements of the task.
 provide the appropriate content according to the task specified.
 use an appropriate format.
 give evidence/reasons to support given response (novel)

serious error should be placed in the upper bands. However, responses with frequent serious and
minor errors should be placed in the lower bands.

6. Read the response again to confirm or change bands.

7. If there is a change in the band, read the response again to check the general criteria specified in the
