What is CA D … ?
 Definition: Computer-aided design is the use of a wide range of computer
based tools that assist engineers, architects, and other design professionals
in their design activities.

 Another definition for it would be the use of computer technology to aid in

the design and particularly the drafting of a part or product, including
entire buildings. It is both visual (or drawing) and symbol-based method of
communication whose conventions are particular to a specific technical
field.

 CAD is translated into different names depending on the purpose it is used

for. For example, "computer assisted" or "computer aided drafting" or even
some related names are CADD which stands for "computer aided design
and drafting". It all depends on the program that CAD is being used for.
What careers use CA D …?
 Architecture
 Industrial Design
 Engineering
 Garden Design
 Construction
 Building Engineering
 Civil Engineering and Infrastructure
 Mechanical
 Electronic and Electrical
 Manufacturing process planning
 Digital Circuit Design
 Software Applications
 Apparel and Textile CAD
 Fashion Design
History
 Designers have long used computers for their
calculations. Initial developments were carried out in
the 1960's within the aircraft and automotive
industries. Most of it was independent of one another
and often not publicly published until later.
 American Ivan Sutherland invented CAD in 1961
when he described a computerized SKETCHPAD in a
doctoral thesis while attending the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT). He designed CAD to
replace the traditional drafting board and other tools
drafters used, such as the ink pen, plastic stencil, and
electric eraser.
History Continued …
 The first commercial applications of CAD were in
large companies in the automotive and aerospace
industries, as well as in the electronics. Only large
corporations could afford the computers capable of
performing the calculations.
 As computers became more affordable, the application
areas have gradually expanded. The development of
CAD software for personal desk-top computers was
the impetus for almost universal application in all areas
of construction.
What are CA D’s advantages
…?
 Precise
 3D detailed drawing
 Computerized model to scale
 Test without having to produce it
 Drawings are device independent
 You can resize easily by using calculation
 More economical and efficient
 Smaller files than bitmapped images
 Easier to see the characteristics
Why is it better to use it …?
 You basically draw on an electronic pad which
transfers your sketch directly into the computer as a
graphic file. It’s better to use CAD than to just scan
designs into a computer because CAD produces vector
art (points and lines) and not just raster pictures as with
a scanner. The drawing pad which is an electronic
drafting board combined with a pencil like object to
create vector art from hand sketches on the pad.
How is CA D involved with
Fashion …?
 Computer-aided design (CAD) is increasingly being
used in the fashion design industry. Although most
designers initially sketch designs by hand, a growing
number also translate these hand sketches to the
computer. CAD allows designers to view designs of
clothing on virtual models and in various colors and
shapes, saving time by requiring fewer adjustments of
prototypes and samples later.
