What do we expect every student to learn?
Standard: What should the student be able to KNOW, UNDERSTAND AND BE ABLE TO DO as a
result of the lesson.

K
 I can compare and contrast Earth’s motions: Rotation and Revolution.
 I can describe the regular and predictable motions of the Earth, moon, and sun explain
patterns on Earth
 Seasons
 Phases of the moon
 Eclipses
 I can understand gravitational forces are always attractive between any two masses (i.e., the sun, the
planets, and moons)
 I can predict the next moon phase based on predictable motions during a Lunar Cycle
 I can identify and organize the planets of our solar system based on their characteristics
 I can describe the star characteristics in the Milky Way galaxy
 Different sizes
 Different temperatures
 Different colors
 I can predict the next stage of stars based on the Life Cycle of a Star.
-For example: Sun
Stellar nebula->medium yellow-> Red Giant

U Understand the the solar system, and the universe; the interconnections among them; and the processes and
interactions of Earth’s systems.

DO
 See Calendar

How will we know the student has learned it?

What is the standard for mastery:
Performance Task – What will student do to show what they have learned? (assessment)
Performance Criteria – How will a student demonstrate mastery of the concept?
CFA (70% or better)

Design of Instruction
 Learning Activities  How will you differentiate?
 Mnemonic  Small Groups
 Articles  Stations
 Stations  Fill-in-the-blank notes
2017-2018 Sierra Middle School Lesson Plan: Solar System Teacher: Arias Cycle Dates: 1/8-2/2 (7 days)

 Gallery Walk  Leveled readers

 Flocabulary Videos  Models
 Card Sort  Repetition
 Heads Up Vocabulary Game  Anchor Charts
 Manipulatives
 Peer tutoring

What will we do if they don’t learn it?

Design prescriptive interventions beginning at Tier1.
 Teacher will go back over scientific procedures and explicitly target areas based on item
analyses. Bell work and exit tickets will target specific objectives from previous classes.
 Science tutoring is available every Wednesday for students by teacher and peers.
 Students are also in groups designed for peer tutoring or small group work with teacher
during the period.

What do we do if they already know it ?

Enrich and Extend Instruction
Planets- students can create a travel brochure featuring characteristics of a planet of their choice
Stars - students can choose a constellation, create a presentation, and share its story to the class
