Motivation

The teacher will ask the class to pick one equation or expression. Then the students will classify or place their
paper to the common place it belong.

20 – 5 6x + 2 = 4 2x x-7
3x – 8 x+3 x2 x + 8 = -6 x – 10 = 15
12y 21 – a = 12 4(x - 3) b - 5 = 10
y+35 = 18 42+ p = 12 11 + 3x = 21

2. Presentation

Recall that a phrase may consists of either English words or mathematical symbols. In which case one
is called a verbal phrase and the other is a mathematical phrase.

The verbal phrase “the sum of seven and eleven” translated into mathematical phrase “7 + 11” is not a
sentence because it does not express a complete thought.

Verbal Phrases Mathematical Phrases

1. The difference between thirty and nine 30 - 9
2. The product of twelve and y (12) (y) or 12y
3. The quotient of x and twenty

4. The ratio of six and seven b

Consider now the expression: “the sum of seven and eleven is eighteen.” This is translated as 7 + 11 =
18.

Notice that the expression is a complete sentence. It is a verbal sentence because of the action word is,
or the mathematical sentence because of the symbol of equality (=).

Again, look at the mathematical sentence 7 + 11 = 18. The two phrases 7 +11 and 18 are connected by the equality symbol (=),
therefore the sentence is an equation. If these phrases are connected by any of the relation symbols (<, >, ≠, ≥, ≤), then t

The teacher will present some examples in the class and the students will
identify what the specific topic was all about.
YES NO
x - 4 = 10 3x ≤ 6
5x - 6 = 3x - 8 3x + 2 > 12 – x
2(3x - 7) = 6 (5 x + 9 ) + 3 x + 4 > 15

The specific topic was about linear equations and inequalities in one
variable.
The teacher will show the bingo cards containing monomials and some
constants that will be shaded by the answer. The students will do it by their respective
groups.

the song will stop and the last student that is holding the cube will be the one to
answer.
A. Determine whether each of the following is a sentence or a phrase. For each
of the following, state whether it is true or false.

2. a > 15 if a = 9
3. x – 10 = 19 if x = 9
4. 3(z) = 54 ÷ 2 if z = 4
5. 4y + 2y = 7y – y if y = 2
