Learning Module

1.) Title: Linear Dynamic Analysis

2.) Overview/ Introduction: In linear dynamic analysis, the applied loads are time-dependent.

The loads can be deterministic (periodic, non-periodic), or non-deterministic which means that

they cannot be precisely predicted but they can be described statistically. The accelerations and

velocities of the excited system are significant, therefore, inertial and damping forces should be

considered in the formulation:

, where

[K]: stiffness matrix

[C]: damping matrix

[M]: mass matrix

{u(t)}: time varying displacement vector

{ϋ(t)}: time varying acceleration factor

{ů(t)}: time varying velocity factor

{f(t)}: time varying load factor

The response of the system is given in terms of time histories (amplitudes versus time), or in

terms of frequency spectra (peak values versus frequency).

For linear dynamic analysis, the mass, stiffness, and damping matrices do not vary with time.

3.) Learning Objectives: The objective of this module is to introduce the student to the process

of Linear Dynamic analysis using Finite Element Method (FEM). Upon completion of the

module, the student should have a good understanding of the necessary logical steps of an FEM

analysis, and be able to perform the following tasks:

 Creating the solid geometry

 Assigning material properties

 Imposing displacement boundary conditions

 Applying external forces

 Meshing

 Running the analysis

 Verifying model correctness

 Processing needed results

4.) Prerequisites: In order to complete the learning module successfully, the following

prerequisites are required:

by subject area:

 Dynamics,

 Mechanics & vibrations of Materials.

by topic: Knowledge of

 Displacement

 Velocity

 Acceleration

 Force balance

 Types of Vibrations

 Harmonic vibrations

 Modal analysis

 Damping

 Free vibrations

 Forced vibrations

 Degrees of Freedom

 Mode shapes

5.) Pre- test: The purpose of the pre-test is to assess the student’s prior to knowledge in

subject areas relevant to static structural analysis such as Mechanics of Materials.
