NOTES
Traditional Worship
There is remarkable unity as well as mystery in
Scripture. After all, would you want a Bible in which
everything could be explained? You would then have
a god who could be comprehended by the smartest
human mind. We already know how much trouble
the “human mind” is in! Having said that, today we
see once again the remarkable unity of the entire
Book. The place of Abraham and Isaac’s encounter
was the the region of Mt. Moriah. The Scriptures
do not specify a particular mountain. They do,
however, note that this was the place on which
Solomon built the Temple, a piece of land purchased
by his father, King David. This was also the region
in which the Lamb of God was the ultimate, final
sacrifice. Thus, around 2,000 bc, Abraham took
Isaac to the region of Mt. Moriah to build an altar
to sacrifice his only son. Around 1,000 bc, King
David purchased property in Mt. Moriah where his
son, Solomon, built the Temple to offer atoning
sacrifices in the worship of God. Another 1,000
years later, God offered His only son, Jesus, who was
crucified as the ultimate, final, perfect sacrifice for
the sins of the whole world. Notice the details of
Scripture. There are no wasted words. In the words
of our opening hymn, “Hail, Abraham’s God and
mine! With heaven our songs we raise. All might
and majesty are thine, and endless praise!”
