A DAY AT

lose your eyes and
think of your “happy
place” here in west-
ern Nevada County.
Is the sun shining?
Are there birds singing? Can
you smell the pine in the warm
summer sun? Do views of green
and blue hues come to mind?
Are you on the water? Pad-
dling about, or pulling a
waterskier?
Are you on the trail? Recon-
necting with nature on the
pathways that guide us?
Are you on the lift? Climbing
to the top of the world to enjoy
the ride back down?
Chances are, no matter where
your happy place takes you in
the Sierra Nevada and its foot-
hills, each return trip reminds
us:
“Oh yeah, that’s why we live
here!”
On June 3, The Union staff
members and a few adven-
turous volunteers headed out
across the community to visu-
ally capture A Day at Play in
western Nevada County. How
do we recreate? In many ways.
Our project date landed

that serves the community by
ensuring access to nature and
also offers an amazing archive
of our trail systems.
Though too early in the
season to be in the river, our
lakes cooled us off beneath the
warm sun, whether kayaking,
paddle-boarding, fishing or
jet-skiing.
Many of us kicked up some
dust on trail, whether biking,
hiking or on horseback. Some
of us found fun at the growers
market, in the cardroom or even
on the slopes — yes, Squaw Val-
ley USA was open that day.

their days at play with us on

Far too often in the hustle and
bustle of daily life, we forget how
fortunate we are to live within
this natural playground that
surrounds us. We’re too busy.
We hurry to that next appoint-

at hand, carpool kids to practice
or rush off to our second job.
Only so many hours in the
day. Take a breath, and think of
that happy place.
