(PRE-PREGGING EPOXY RESIN SYSTEM – LONG POT LIFE)

PRODUCT

EPOFINE® - 6071A80 is a high strength epoxy resin, FINECURE -197 is a toughener,

FINECURE – 190 is a tackifier, FINEHARDTM - 986 is a dicyandiamide based hardener and
Accelerator-062 is a tertiary amine. Pre-pregs made with this five-component resin system can
be stored up to one year at temperatures of -18oC.

APPLICATION

EPOFINE®–6071A80 / FINECURE-197 / FINECURE-190 / FINEHARD-986 /

ACCELAROETOR-062 system is suitable for making pre-preg laminates with shelf life of
more than 40 days at -4oC or one year at -18oC or below. The pre-pregs can be used to make
industrial laminates for electrical or structural applications. These laminates can withstand
temperatures upto 150oC in dynamic conditions. Typical industrial applications are in
manufacture of cooling tower blades and windmill blades by press-moulding of pre-preg
stacks.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The following advantages make it ideal for industrial use.

• Mixing ratio (Resin : toughener : tackifier : Hardener : Accelerator = 100 : 50 : 17 : 68 : 0.5

by weight)
• Solvent containing system.
• Tolerant mixing ratio (± 2 %).
• Pre-pregging temperature can be 60 – 80oC.
• Curing temperatures can be as low as 130oC.
• Good Laminate Performance upto +150oC under dynamic .
• Low surface tension of the mix, ensures good wetting of the reinforcement.
• Excellent water resistance.
• Very Good chemical resistance and electrical insulation.

PROCESS
Resin, toughener, tackifier and hardener components are weighed accurately in a clean dry
steel container and mix at an RPM of 20 – 60. Ensure that the entire quantity is mixed
uniformly, particularly from the sides and bottom. After getting uniformity of the mix, add
accelerator and continue mixing for another 10 minutes. After mixing, transfer the resin mix to
the fabric either by a doctor blade or any other appropriate arrangement.

After coating the fabric with the resin, pass it through an air circulated oven at 60 – 80oC for 5
– 8 minutes. Pre-pregging time has to be carefully established, taking in to consideration the
heat transfer rate to the fabric. Excessive heat transfer will tend to reduce the life of the pre-
preg. Inadequate heat transfer will make the pre-preg too tacky to handle.

After pre-drying the laminate pre-preg is protected with release film and quickly cooled to
temperatures below 10oC. For fabricating the components, the pre-pregs are brought to room
temperature without exposing to humidity and then cut in to required dimensions and shaped in
to components by hot pressing.
