HOW TO USE THIS LEARNER’S GUIDE
Welcome to the learner’s guide for the Module in Performing Pre- and Post –
Operation Procedures for Motor Grader. This learner’s guide contains training
materials and activities for you to complete.

The unit of competency Perform Pre- and Post – Operation Procedures for
Motor Grader contains knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a Backhoe Operator.
It is the first CORE competency in Heavy Equipment Operation (Motor Grader) NCII
program.

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete


each of the learning outcomes of the whole module. In each learning outcome there are
Information Sheets, Task Sheets, Operation Sheets and Job Sheets for further
reading to help you better understand the required activities. Follow these activities on your
own and Answer the Self-Check at the end of each learning outcome. If you have
questions, please don’t hesitate to ask your instructor or facilitator for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may have some or most of the knowledge and skills (RPL) covered in this
learner’s guide because you have:

 Been working for some time.


 Already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in particular skill, you
don’t have to do the same training again.

If you feel you have some of the skills, talk to your trainer about having them
formally recognized. If you have qualification or Certificate of Competency from previous
training, show it to your trainer. If the skill you required is still relevant to the module, they
may become the part of the evidence you present for RPL.

At the end of this learning material is a learner’s Diary. Use this diary to record important
dates, jobs undertaken and to other workplace events that will assist you further details to
your trainers or assessors. A Record of Achievement is also provided for your trainer to
complete once you complete this module.

This module was prepared to help you achieve the required competency in Perform Pre-
and Post – Operation Procedures for Motor Grader . This will be the source of information
for you to acquire knowledge and skills in this particular trade, with minimum supervision
or help from your instructor. With the aid of this material you will acquire the competency
independently and at your own pace.

 Talk to your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the Training of this
unit. Read through the learning guide carefully. It is divided into sections which
cover all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully complete in this module.
 Work through all the information and complete the activities in each section. Read
information sheets and complete the self-check. Suggested references are included
to supplement the materials provided in this module.
 Most probably your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager. He/she is there
to support you and show you the correct way to do thing. Ask for help.
 Your trainer will tell you about the important things you need to consider when you
are completing activities and it is important that you listen and take notes.
 You will be given plenty of opportunity ask questions and practice on the job. Make
sure you practice your new skills during regular work shifts. This way you will
improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.
 Talk to more experience workmates and ask for their guidance.
 Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your own progress.
 When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch you perform the activities outline in
the learning guide.
 As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback on your progress. Your
trainer keeps feedback/pre-assessment reports for this reason. When you have
successfully completed each element, ask your trainer to mark on the reports that
you are ready for assessment.
 When you have completed this module (or several modules), and feel l confident
that you have had sufficient practice, your trainer will arrange an appointment with
registered assessor to assess you. The results of your assessment will be recorded in
your competency Achievement Record.

PROCEDURES FOR MOTOR GRADER

Introduction:

This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitude required in performing procedures
before and after productive operation of Motor Grader. It also includes lessons about identifying
motor grader types/components parts, performing visual check of equipment, checking BLOWAF of
Motor Grader, checking Motor Grader systems operation, checking safety devices and accessories,
and performing post operation check.

The different activities and practices in this module will help you enhance your knowledge
and skills and preparing these things, more particularly in practicing career professionalism.
Appropriate materials are used according to required and standard operating procedures.

The module consists of six (6) learning outcome. Each outcome contains learning activities
for both knowledge and skills, supported with information sheets, self-checked and job/operation
sheet gathered from different sources. Before you perform the manual exercises, read the
information / and answer the self-check provided to confirm, to yourself and to your instructor that
you are equipped with knowledge necessary to perform the skill portion of the particular learning
outcomes.

Upon completion of this module you have to submit to your instructor for assessment. You
will be given a certificate of competency as a proof that you met the standard requirements
(Knowledge & Skills) for this module. The assessment could be in different methods as prescribed
of the Competency Standard.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

Identify Motor Grader types/ components

Perform visual check of equipment

Check BLOWAF of Motor Grader

Check Motor Grader systems operation

Check safety devices and accessories

Perform post operation check


ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Earth-moving equipment is selected based on job requirements.


2. Operator serviceable (OS) parts are checked in accordance with equipment
checklist and manufacturer’s procedures.
3. Walk-around check is performed with equipment checklist and with engine
stopped/not running.
4. “BLOWAF” check is performed with checklist form and with engine stopped/not
running.
5. Deficiencies in fluid levels are identified and if below normal level are refilled/
topped up in accordance with equipment maintenance manual.
6. Abnormal conditions are noted in checklist and reported to authorized person.
7. Starting/running check is performed with checklist and in accordance with
manufacturer’s recommendations.
8. Brake, steering and controls are checked for normal functioning
9. Walk-around check is performed with equipment checklist and with engine running.
10. Safety devices and accessories are checked for proper functions in accordance
with safe operating procedures.
11. Earth-moving equipment is parked and turned off after productive operation in
accordance with company rules and regulations.
12. Equipment controls are set into neutral position and parking brakes are engaged
according to manufacturer’s operations manual.
13. Safety locks and brakes are all set/engaged in accordance with operator’s manual.
14. Walk-around inspection check is re-conducted while doing engine cool down
15. Daily equipment time record/report (DETR) is accomplished/submitted according to
company rules and regulations
16. Demonstrates ability to select earthmoving equipment based on the job
requirements
17. Demonstrates ability to check and service operator-serviceable (OS) parts
18. Demonstrates ability to perform walk-around and “BLOWAF” inspection following
equipment checklist and with engine stopped/not running.
19. Demonstrates ability to perform walk-around check while engine is running.
20. Demonstrates ability to follow risk-control/safe procedures
21. Demonstrates ability to perform post-operation checking procedures
22. Demonstrates ability to accomplished daily equipment time record/report (DETR)
