Pyelonephritis is an infection of the kidneys that is usually caused by a bacterial infection that travels up the ureters from the bladder. The infection causes inflammation in the kidneys which can damage the renal parenchyma if left untreated. This paper will discuss the pathophysiology of pyelonephritis including how bacteria travel to the kidneys and the body's immune response.
