2015-2016 MVAD Design Challenges

GEM Lab:
1. Develop a concept image which represents your ideas for a new computer user interface
system that requires full body movement to control programs, apps, or hardware systems (no
touch screens, mice, or keyboards).
2. Develop a drive or propulsion system for individual or group transport system which does not
use fossil fuels and can be self-sustaining for at least as long as a comparable fossil fuel-based
vehicle (does not need to be recharged for more than one hour if electric without moving).
3. Develop a machine, program, or service to...
-this might include the e-Nable Talon hand.

MIT Lab:
1. Develop a floor plan, elevations, and 3-D model of a virtual museum in SketchUp to exhibit
history, arts, or media and share it on the web via multiple formats (including on the 3-D
warehouse).
2. Develop a short story (including two characters, setting, and plot) and turn it into a video
game via Scratch.
3. Develop a short, interactive video (up to six videos), comic book (up to six pages), or graphic
novel (up to 12 pages) series using iMovie, MovieMaker, YouTube, Weebly.com, and/or graphic
illustration software to immerse your audience in a topic or story.

VAD Lab:
1. Develop a 2D image which emulates, critiques, and transforms a work of visual art by a
chosen artist.
2. Develop a 3D artwork which is interactive, mobile, and partially electronic based on the
artwork of a chosen artist.
3. Develop a style of 2D or 3D visual art which represents your generation.

iSoPoTech Lab:
1. Develop an interactive image-based document which details the history and purposes of civil
engineering and city planning.
2. Develop an interactive map of a city of the future which includes transportation routes,
residential areas, educational institutions/systems, industry, governmental organizations,
hospitals and health systems, recreational ares, and communication infrastructure.
3. Develop a new, affordable system of transportation or communication for socio-economically
depressed regions or groups of citizens.

CPE Lab:
1. Develop a virtual museum/exhibit space in SketchUp to educate an audience about a chosen
culture or subculture from the past, present, or future.
2. Develop and interactive media presentation about your choice from Lab Challenge #1 to
share with your audience as they experience the exhibit.
3. Create at least one real artifact(s) from your chosen culture or subculture from Lab Challenge
#1. Write an informative paragraph about that culture or subculture and an informative
paragraph about your created artifact(s). Exhibit your artifact and writing electronically.
2015-2016 MVAD Design Challenges

StEMS Lab:
1. Create orthographic projections and isometric drawings of one of the objects in the StEMS
bin.
2. Develop orthographic projections and isometric drawings of a product or architectural feature
which is designed to help people who are elderly or physically impaired in a specific way. Label
the building materials in the drawing using visual symbols and words. Write a product or
architectural design brief which details and justifies your design choices.
3. Develop a prototype of you product or model of your architectural feature, color and label
each part with the material it will be made of.

BioOps Lab:
1. Develop an interactive illustration of an organism and A. its interactions in its ecosystem, B.
its biological functions, OR C. its place within the food chain and exhibit it on the web.
2. Develop a virtual space to educate your viewers on health, recreation, or food processing and
add written communication (informative signage) about your specific topic.
3. Develop a food or product package which displays health, source, and manufacturing
information to promote healthy decision making about nutrition, health care, recreational activity,
and global networks dealing with health and wellness.
4. Create a physical and digital campaign about Stroke awareness and prevention according to
the rules for the campaign.

ArchiTech (Architecture Technologies) Lab:


1. Develop a new work of architecture using an existing style on paper as a floor plan and
elevations.
2. Develop a model of the work of architecture form Lab Challenge #1 in SketchUp and export it
as a .dae file into SightSpace 3D.
3. Develop your own style of architecture in a floor plan and elevations and create your design
in SketchUp employing universal design.
4. Develop a new building technique and architectural style inspired by or employing biomimicry.

FaDD (Fashion Design and Display) Lab:


1. Develop a fashion style which represents your generation. Include color and fabric swatches,
a hand drawn image of one piece of fashion in that style, and a drawing or painting of
symbolism representing the mood or tone of your chosen style. Create drawings and at least
one completed piece of fashion in your style.
2. Develop a fashion line which incorporates new (30%), used (40%), and biological materials
(30%) starting with a mood board, creating pieces of the fashion, and laying out an exhibit of
your line.
3. Develop communication design for your brand: logo, static advertisement(s), audio/visual
advertisement(s), posters, website, web/magazine photo shoot (in conjunction with
the PhotoCorps Lab).

PhotoCorps Lab:
1. Create sketches for a series of photography you would like to make which details your own
opinions or philosophies on a current event or problem.
2. Develop your photographs for your series using Photoshop to manipulate values, create
interesting collaged portions, and print your images in black and white on transparency film.
3. Print your series in cyanotype on a structural support. experiment with adding dye or paint to
your images to create exactly the intent you mean to communicate to your viewers.
