1. (a) Show that the steady state transmittable power can be increased and the voltage
profile along the line can be controlled by suitable reactive shunt compensation.

(b) How do FACTS devices improve transient stability and what are the general
considerations of FACTS control strategy? (15 marks)

2. (a) Briefly explain the basic types of FACTS controllers (15 marks)

(b) Describe the benefits from FACTS technology. (10 marks)

3. (a) Explain the working principle of a STATCOM. Prove that the reactive power
requirements can be met with practically no storage elements. (15 marks)

4. With neat circuit diagrams describe the operation of various variable impedance type

5. (a) Obtain an expression for the transmitted real power provided by SSSC as a function
of the series compensating voltage. Illustrate the difference with series capacitive
compensation. (15 marks)
(b) With relevant sketches and equations, explain the operation of a Thyristor Switched
Series Capacitor (TSSC). (10 marks)

6. Explain how improvement in voltage stability, Transient stability, Power Oscillation


damping and Sub Synchronous resonance damping can be achieved using an SSSC. Also
explain why it is immune to sub synchronous resonance problems. (25 marks)

7. Derive equations for real and reactive power flow using a UPFC. Clearly explain the
improvement in attainable real power and receiving-end reactive power demand.
