term setbacks, such as shortage of hotel rooms,[6] tourism revenues are expected to surge by 42% from 2007 to
2017.[7]

In short, ecotourism can be categorised as a tourism programme that is - "Nature based, Ecologically
sustainable, Where education and interpretation is a major constituent and Where local people are benefited."
All this together can be called ecotourism. If a travel does not satisfy any one of these constituents, then it is not
called a real ecotourism venture.
Nature and natural world are back in the world, in people's consciousness and in the markets with a vengeance.
The march of technology is accompanied by an mushrooming awareness of the need to respect the environment.
The condition of our planet is a cause for concern for many environmentalists the world over and efforts to stem
the damage are gaining momentum by the day. People form the world are finding pleasure in going back to
natural products and tastes as opposed to the artificial and the synthetic. Be it in food, fashion and interior
decoration. After all, what can compete with the taste of fresh mango ice cream? Certainly not artificially
flavored and colored mango ice cream. Nothing can compare with the coolness of cotton on one's skin on a hot
summer's day. It goes for the Nature tourism or Eco Tourism also. Whether it is the eco tourism drive launched
by the green state of Kerala or promotion of Heritage Hotels by Rajasthan, all of these initiatives indicate
toward the growing popularity for eco tourism in India.
There are three specific segments of Eco Tourism. Nature Tourism-based on the web of life or life forms,
Adventure Tourism-dealing with sports activities in various natural environs, and Culture Tourism-dealing with
aspects of social and cultural heritage. Indian Holiday supports and extends help in conducting travel that fulfill
all the activities that helps regenerate and preserve environment. Come and explore India in an effort to save the
ecological heritage of India.
Though Green travel in India is still at its nascent stage, several environment conscious tour operators have
slowly started developing eco-friendly travel and tour packages for India. The concept of Green travel was
originally sparked off by the idea of making harmonious co-existence with nature a reality once again. We at
Indianvisit are one such group of travel agents and tour operators for India who are striving for a purer and
cleaner environment. Our Green travels have been developed in response to the urgent need for adopting more
nature friendly lifestyles. The perilously high rate of global warming is indication enough that if humankind
does not adopt a more pro-active stance, nature is going to buckle under the onslaught of careless neglect and
industrialism.
It is tragic that since last few decades, the mad quest for the material end and economical progress in India and
abroad has become identical with the exploitation of nature in all its appearances. Today, the entire world is
facing a deep crisis and is in the danger of being doomed. The rich forest areas and biological diversities have
been relentlessly divested to erect concrete walls. The continuos denuding of forest reserves has led to Global
Warming and Greenhouse Effects. Fortunately, this has led to some realisation, and now the world has awaken
for new beginnings about human responsibility towards nature.
Ecotourism in India
India, the land of varied geography offers several tourist destinations that not just de-stress but also rejuvenate
you. There are several ways to enjoy Mother Nature in most pristine way. The few places like the Himalayan
Region, Kerala, the northeast India, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the Lakshdweep islands are some of the
places where you can enjoy the treasured wealth of the Mother Nature. Thenmala in Kerala is the first planned
ecotourism destination in India created to cater to the Eco-tourists and nature lovers.
The India topography boasts an abundant source of flora & fauna. India has numerous rare and endangered
species in its surroundings. The declaration of several wildlife areas and national parks has encouraged the
growth of the wildlife resource, which reduced due to the wildlife hunt by several kings in the past. Today,
India has many wildlife sanctuaries and protection laws. Currently, there are about 80 national parks and 441
sanctuaries in India, which works for the protection and conservation of wildlife resource in India.
There are numerous Botanical and Zoological Gardens in India, which are working towards the enhancement of
the Ecosystem. Poaching has stopped to large extent. There are severe punishments for poachers, hunters and
illegal traders of animals and trees. Tree plantation are taking place in several places. There are several animal
& plant rights organisation, who fight for the rights of the animals and plants. Numerous organisations and
NGOs are coming forward to provide environmental education to the common people at the grass root level.

Ayurveda
Major Location : Kerala, though Ayurveda is practiced in almost all the part of India.
Time : Any time of the year. But, the treatment is best during the Monsoons.
"Life (ayu) is the combination (samyoga) of body, senses, mind and reincarnating soul. Ayurveda is the most sacred
science of life, beneficial to humans both in this world and the world beyond."
Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana, 1.42-43.
What is Ayurveda ?
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word, derived from two roots : 'Ayush', which means life, and 'Veda', which mean knowledge.
Therefore, Ayurveda is the science of life.
Ayurveda is a science dealing not only with treatment of some diseases but is a complete way of life. It is only system of
medicine which imbibes suggestions and remedies for both healthy and diseased people. Centuries before the World
Health Organization recognized that health is not merely the physical well being and just the absence of disease,
ayurveda was dealing with the mental, physical and social well being of an individual.
In its broader sense, Ayurveda has always demanded to prepare mankind for the realisation of the full potential of its
self through a psychosomatic integration. A complete health care is what Ayurveda prescribes for the ultimate self-
realisation. The Rig Veda also mentions organ transplants and herbal remedies called Soma with properties of elixir.
During 3,000 to 2,000 BC Atharvaveda one of the four Vedas was authored, of which Ayurveda is an Upaveda
(subsection). Though, Ayurveda had been practiced all along, it was during this period that ayurveda in India, was
codified from the oral tradition to book form, as an independent science. Atharvaveda enlists eight branches of
Ayurveda namely - Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine), Shalakya Tantra (surgery and treatment of head and neck,
Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology), Shalya Tantra (Surgery), Agada Tantra (Toxicology), Bhuta Vidya (Psychiatry),
Kaumarabhritya (Pediatrics), Rasayana (science of rejuvenation or anti-aging), and Vajikarana (the science of fertility).
The most fascinating aspect of Ayurveda is, it uses almost all the methods of healing like lifestyle regimen, yoga, aroma,
meditation, gems, amulets, herbs, diet, jyotishi (astrology), colour and surgery etc. in treating patients.
There are seven body types: mono-types (vata, pitta or kapha predominant), dual types (vata-pitta, pitta-kapha or,
kapha-vata), and equal types, (vata, pitta and kapha in equal proportions). Every individual has a unique combination of
these three doshas. To understand the uniqueness of every individual is the very basis of ayurveda.
Conclusion
Ayurveda is the system of medicine incorporating centuries of wisdom in it. The emphasis here is on ways to promote
health rather than just treat disease. The beauty of the system is that every individual is unique rather than being just
another case of particular disease. It is one of the few systems of medicine taking mental, emotional and spiritual well
being into account. All the suggestions and remedies prescribed in Ayurveda are completely in conjunction with nature.
This return of interest in the plant based (Ayurveda) drugs have necessitated a growing demand of medicinal plants
leading to over-exploitation, unsustainable harvesting and finally to the virtual killing of several precious plant species in
the wild. Moreover, the biosphere degradation due to increased human activities (human settlements, agriculture and
other developmental programmes), illegal trade in rare and endangered medicinal plants, and loss of regeneration
potential of the degraded forests have further activated the current rate of extinction of plants particularly the
medicinal plants.
In this extremely difficult situation the country has to implement its commitment to the conservation of bio-diversity
and its sustainable use. Considering that, at present 90% collection of medicinal plants is from wild, generating about 40
million mandays employment current practices of harvesting are unsustainable and responsible for depletion of
resource base. To reverse this process Forest Departments have to initiate following actions -
Identify forest areas rich in medicinal plants (about 200 in number having an area of about 5000 ha) formulate a
management plan for intensive management and sustainable harvesting of herbal products.
Establishment of 200 "Vanaspati Van" in degraded forest areas where medicinal plants exist or existed. Each "Vanaspati
Van" should have an area of 3000-5000 ha, with irrigation facility and managed by a registered society headed by
Divisional Forest Officer.
It should effectively regulate extraction and transport of medicinal plants from wild. Department should maintain a list
of petty traders, private agents, wholesale dealers and final consumers of medicinal plants. It should organise training
and awareness campus on various aspects of medicinal plant development.
