Unit 5: American Industrial Growth
Student Booklet
Q: What do you mean by student booklet?
A: The booklet assignment requires that students make and complete assignments on their own. This format
allows you to CREATE your own assignments (just follow the guidelines). You will need to use the textbook
as a resource, but you will be applying the information to charts and organizers, bios, newspaper articles,
political cartoons, etc. The booklet allows YOU TO BE CREATIVE!
1. Bio on Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, and Thomas Edison
Directions: Write a short bio on the three historical figures listed above. Your bios on Andrew Carnegie
and John Rockefeller should include:
the beginning of their career
how they became successful
the business that they started
an explanation of their business strategy (vertical integration or horizontal integration)
Your bio on Thomas Edison should include his major contributions (electric light bulb, motion pictures,
and phonograph) and how his contributions changed American life.
2. Immigration flow chart
Directions: Create a flow chart that shows the journey that immigrants experienced when coming to
America. You will create TWO DIFFERENT flow charts. One flow chart will show the path of an
immigrant that came from Asia and the other flow chart will show the path of an immigrant from a
European country. Each flow chart should include a description of:
life in the native country (occupation, social class, family)
the journey to America (include where in America the immigrant ended up)
the immigration station (Ellis Island and Angel Island)
the search to find a job (who helped? Where did immigrants work?)
the search for housing (where did immigrants in that city live?)
3. Labor Union graphic organizer
Directions: Read about the American Federation of Labor, Knights of Labor, and the American Railway
Union. Create a graphic organizer that shows the key people, goals, and events associated with each
labor union.
4. Solutions to societal and government problems
Directions: Industrialization and urbanization led to many problems in the American society and in the
American government. Read about the problems and the solutions in your textbook. You are to create a
graphic organizer that explains why the solution was needed and what the solution accomplished. Your
graphic organizer should also indicate whether or not the solution was created to improve the society or
the government. The following are solutions that you should consider: social gospel movement,
settlement houses, Sherman Antitrust Act, Populism, Progressivism, initiative, referendum, recall,
direct election of senators, 19th Amendment, campaign against child labor, and safer working conditions
5. Muckraker expose’.
Directions: After reading the excerpt from The Jungle, create your own expose’ that reveals a major
problem in our society today. First, you must think of a major problem, then you must find a way to
describe this problem. Your description should grab the attention of your audience! You can either write
