"Big Mose"

1 Once there was a fireman named Moses. He lived in New York during the early
1800s. He was a big man with red hair. People say that he was eight feet tall! He was so
strong that he was called "Big Mose."
2 One night, there was a fire. The other firemen put on their gear. Big Mose was a few
blocks away, so he jumped through the air and got there first.
3 The fire was spreading fast. He needed a lot of water to put it out. He looked at the
Hudson River and got an idea. He started digging a tunnel underneath the river. His shovel
was as big as a trolley car.
4 Big Mose worked through the night. He kept digging the tunnel until he was under
the spot where the fire was still burning. He was tired, but he knew he had the strength to
beat the fire.
5 The other firemen were about to give up hope. "Stand back!" Big Mose told them.
6 He ran to the far end of the tunnel underneath the river. He swung an ax over his
head, trying to break through into the river above. At first, only a few drops of water leaked
into the tunnel. Big Mose swung the ax again, as hard as he could. Millions of gallons of
water spilled into the tunnel.
7 Big Mose jumped up. He watched the water drain out of the river and into his tunnel.
Within a few minutes, the fire was out. The riverbed was almost dry.
8 He went back to the scene of the fire. His fellow firemen and the people of New York
cheered for him. "Hooray for Mose!" they roared. "Hooray for Mose!"
9 The riverbed eventually filled with water again, but Big Mose's tunnel remained.
Many years later, it became the first subway tunnel in New York City.

What is the main problem that Big Mose faces in the story?

A How to swim across the Hudson River

B How to get more water to fight a fire
C How to get along with the other firemen
D How to get around in New York
