ARCHAEOLOGY AS A DIPLOMATIC TOOL—OLD AND NEW INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS AND
THEIR POLITICAL INTEREST IN GLOBAL ARCHAEOLOGY

Archaeology, as well as cultural heritage, has always played a crucial, albeit often overlooked,
role both as an instrument to establish or reinforce international relations and as a political tool.
Archaeology deals with two distinct but complementary domains: materiality and ideas and
ideologies in the shape of physical sites and objects, as well as historical narratives. Both
domains are crucial for the confluence of archaeology, politics and international relations.
Our workshop aim at exploring this themes along the following perspectives, but also welcome
further suggestions:
• Archaeology as an economic resource on the international level
• Archaeology as a provider of narratives to legitimize power relations/the status quo
• Archaeology as a means of cross-cultural communication
• Archaeology and the genesis and negotiation of political identities
Our goal is to develop a fruitful cross-disciplinary dialogue, and therefore we strongly encourage
researchers of all fields connected to archaeology, anthropology, heritage and museum studies,
international law and international relations to apply.
The main aim is to get as complete a picture as possible, without chronological or geographical
boundaries. Papers challenging the notion that archaeological knowledge production is
politically neutral and emphasizing the intersection between archaeology, cultural heritage,
politics and international relations in current affairs are particularly encouraged.
Our workshop will therefore welcome contributions related with both the colonial origins of
archaeology as well as its ongoing legacy in the global South and the contemporary world as a
whole.
The workshop will consist of 15 mins presentations followed by discussion.
Accepted participants will be expected to submit a paper of max. 6,000 words by 04 May 2018
that will be made circulate before the workshop, so that participants will have a general
overview of the topics presented and more fruitful discussions will be possible during the round
table.

Information about your submission:
• The Call for Papers opens on 20 November 2017. Please remember that the deadline to
submit your abstract proposal is 10 January 2018 (Wednesday, 11:59 PM).
• Abstracts up to 200 words, presentations are 15 min. Discussion will follow.
• Applicants will be notified about the outcome of the selection process by 10 February
2018.
• Accepted papers are expected to be part of a prospective publication project, which will
be discussed during the actual workshop.
• Unfortunately, at the moment we cannot provide support for travel and accommodation
expenses. But we can give a letter of support for accepted papers by mid-February 2018
to solicit funds from your university or organizations. If grants should become available,
we will promptly communicate them.
• Registration to the conference opens on 10 February 2018 and closes on 16 March
2018. The registration fee for EISA members will be EUR 120 (full) / EUR 60 (students).
The non-member rate is EUR 200 (full) / EUR 100 (students) and does not include
membership. The fee includes participation in the conference, attendance at the keynote
and plenary events, grand reception (all on 06 June) and happy hours. Please note that
there will be a closing party on Friday, 08 June.
