Service life is defined as the period of time in which a structure

performs its function without unforeseen or extraordinary
maintenance or repair or rehabilitation. There is a common belief
that life of a structure is 100 years. When we see around us, we
find that is true in case of some buildings like Chhatrapati
Shivaji MaharajTerminus Building (Erstwhile V.T.) in Mumbai.
Whereas there are so many other buildings around us which
show symptoms of deterioration within 10-15 years of life. I this
training session we are going to cover structural assessment,
Non-Destructive Testing, Condition Survey, Distress
mechanism and Repairing the distress to ensure about the
structure safety and strength.

Structural Assessment: It is a procedure utilized to check the

adequacy, structural integrity and soundness of structures and
their components. All building and Structures requires
inspection and maintenance to ensure structure safety, strength
and stability. this process includes Structural Audits, Statutory
requirements, Data collection from field.

Non-Destructive Testing: Nondestructive testing (NDT) is the

process of inspecting, testing, evaluating materials, components
or system without causing damage. It is used to ensure the
quality of materials and joining processes during the fabrication.
This kind of testing is done by using penetration medium or
equipment called Rebound hammer. The testing also includes
Ultrasonic pulse velocity, Half cell potentiometer, Carbonation
test. It is a highly valuable technique that can minimize the cost
and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting, and research.

Structural Condition Survey: Structural condition survey

investigates the damage of a certain structural part of your
building and suggest applicable repair method. This process
includes various distress symptoms, mapping of distress,
Preparing records,Text form, photographs, summarizing
observations Report writing.

Distress Mechanism: It is a process in which the building needs

maintenance due to deterioration/aging of materials and
structural components leading to corrosion and cracking.
Weathering, ageing, Environmental effects, Inadequate
maintenance, water leakage leading to corrosion of concrete
structure. This training session will include understanding the
distress mechanism, choice of material & methodology, factors
affecting selection, Cost, Understanding leakage mechanism.
Based on this distress causing factor and methodology to repair
cost will be estimated.

This two-day program will help participants to understand

various facets of the Repairs operation, how to control un-
necessary expenditure and achieve “value for money” spent.
