Circle Problems

Solve three of the following problems using the GRASP method. Each solution needs to be accompanied by a labelled
diagram (I suggest using pencil first, then marker). Solve which ever problem first, as there may be other people
working at different questions.

1) Using the target on the board: a) Determine the circumference of each ring
b) Determine the total area of the GREEN rings
c) Determine the total area of the BLACK rings

2) Mr. Henderson and his friend, Mr. Monken, both ran a race around a circular track. Mr. Henderson ran a total
distance of 267m around the track. The circle that Mr. Monken ran has a diameter of 8229cm.
a) Who ran the furthest? By how much?
b) What is the area of the circle that each person ran?

3) On the clock, there is the hour hand and the minute hand, each rotating completely around the clock.
a) What is the circumference of each hand? By how much is the minute hand bigger
b) What is the area covered by each hand? By how much is the minute hand bigger?

4) Mr. Henderson wants to have a community circle with the class. He wants to know the circumference of a circle made
with all of the chairs in the class. He also wants to know how much of the room will not be taken up by the circle
(Include the entrance alcove).

5) On Mr. Henderson’s board, there is a drawing of a U-shaped table. Using your understanding of composite shapes,
what is the area of that table?

6) On the back counter is a circular cut out with a roll of tape on it. What is the area of the cut out, excluding that which
is covered by the tape? (Be mindful of the shape of the tape)

7) Mr. Henderson wants to throw a Frisbee so that is will land perfectly inside of a hula hoop on the ground. What is the
area around the Frisbee if it were to land in the hula hoop?

8) Two circular disks have a radii 8 and 28. The larger disc is fixed, while the smaller disc rolls around the outside of the
larger disc. In their original positions, point A on the smaller disc coincides with point B on the larger disc. What is the
least number of rotations that the smaller disc would need to make before points A and B are touching again?

B A
