POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Fall Year : 2005

Programme: BE Full Marks: 100
Course: Water Resources Engineering II Time : 3hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.

1. a) What are the different methods of classifying the hydroelectric power 8

plant? What do you understand by run-of-river plant? Write down the
main functions of run-of-river plant.
b) A hydropower plant has an installed capacity of 60MW. The yearly 7
output of the plant is 235106 kWh. If the peak load is 52,000 kW,
determine i) annual load factor, ii) plant factor and iii) utilization
factor.
2. a) Explain the method of calculating reservoir capacity and specific 5
yield of reservoir from mass inflow curve.
b) If the present firm power of the system for the flow duration curve 10
(table) given below is increased to 44 MW. What is the storage
capacity of reservoir required if the net head available is 40 m, design
discharge is 5000 m3 sec and efficiency is 0.85.

3. For the gravity dam shown in figure, determine i) factor of safety against 15
sliding, ii) factor of safety against overturning, iii) maximum vertical stress
at toe and iv) is there any tension?
Assume  = 0.70, concrete = 24 kN/m3, w = 10 kN/m3.

a) Explain briefly the forces that act on gravity dam. 5
b) What are the different modes of failure of earthen dam? Explain. An 10
earthen dam of homogenous materials with drain is given in figure
below. Determine the coordinates of phreatic line and seepage
discharge passing through the body of dam. The coefficient of
permeability is 510-4 cm/sec.
4. A power house is fed by a 7 km long concrete lined tunnel of 6.5m 15
diameter. Discharge through the tunnel = 32m3/s. A Surge tank of 24m
diameter is connected to turbines by three penstock pipes each of 475 m
long and equivalent dia of 1.85m each. Friction factor for tunnel = 0.018
and that of penstock pipe = 0.025. Celerity of wave in penstock pipe =
1300m/s. Find

b) A Concrete dam has been designed to pass a flood of 3550 m /s in the 12
D/s of the river. The profile of the dam permits a head of 5.25m over
the crest. If the discharge coefficient is 0.95 and approach velocity
=0.8 m/s, determine the crest length to safely discharge the above
flow. Also if s = 0.001 & n = 0.025 and dam height = 25.0m design
the hydraulic jump stilling basin.

b) Micro Hydro potential in Nepal
c) Cavitations problem and its remedial measures.
