B. Arch. Examination November 2015

AR-104: Structure-I
Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 60

Note: Attempt all five questions. Part a, b, and c of each question is compulsory and
carries 1, 2, and 2 marks respectively. Out of parts d and e (7 marks each) any one
of them is to be attempted. Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.

1. a. What is meant by a couple?

b. State Lami’s theorem of three concurrent forces?
c. State the equations of equilibrium for general coplanar force system.
d. The following three forces act on a point: 10kN due east, 10kN due north, 10√2 kN
North-East, and 20√2kN South-West; Determine the resultant of above forces.
e. Two horizontal forces of 19 kN each is acting from left to right on the ends of a 1 m
long vertical bar. Convert it to a equivalent force acting at lower end of the bar
accompanied by a couple.

a. Define center of gravity?

2. b. State Parallel Axis theorem of moment of inertia.
c. Discuss stable, unstable and neutral equilibrium.
d. Find the centroid of the T-section shown in Fig.1.
e. Determine moment of inertia of the channel-section shown in Fig.2. about horizontal
axis passing through centroid.
a. Define bending moment at a beam cross section.
3. b. Discuss sign convention for drawing shear force diagram.
c. State relationship between shear force and loading.
d. Draw the bending moment diagram for the simply supported beam shown in figure-3.
e. For the cantilever beam shown in figure-4, draw shear force diagram.

a) Write down transverse shear stress formula.

b) Explain pure bending.
4.
c) Define flexural rigidity and its effect on flexural stresses.
d) Deduce and plot the bending distribution for a rectangular cross section.
e) Sketch the shear stress distribution across the cross section of a rectangular beam
section 230 × 400 m subjected to a transverse shear force of 100kN.

a. Define stress and strain.
5. b. What are different elastic constants? Write a relation between any two of them.
c. How do you determine elongation of a uniformly tapered bar subjected to an axial
load?
d. Find the modulus of rigidity for a rod of diameter 20 mm and length of 350 mm. The
rod is subjected to an axial load of 5.5 kN & extension of rod is 0.025 mm. Take
Poisson’s ratio equal to 0.25.
e. A cube of 100 mm side is subjected to 10 N/mm2 (tensile), 8 N/mm2 (compressive)
and 6 N/mm2 (tensile) stresses acting along X, Y and Z axes respectively. Determine
the strains along the three directions and the change in volume. Take Poisson’s ratio =
0.25 and E = 2x105 N/mm2.
