GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
(i) All questions are compulsory.
(ii) Question No. 1 to 8 are very short qeustions carrying one mark each.
(iii) Question No. 9 to 18 are short answer questions carrying 2 marks each.
(iv) Question No. 19 to 27 are also short answer questions carrying 3 marks each.
(v) Question No. 28 to 30 are logn answer questions carrying 5 marks each.
(vi) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choce has been provided in one question of two marks, one
question of three marks and all three questions of five marks each. You have to attempt only one of the
given choice in such questions.
(vii) Use of calculators is not permitted. Use the log tables wherever necessary.

8. A charged particle oscillates about its mean equilibrium position with a frequency of 10 9 Hz. What is the
frequency of the electromagnetic waves producde by the oscillator ? [1 Mark]

9. Identify the following electromagnetic radiations as per the frequencies given below : [2 Marks]
(a) 1020 Hz (b) 109 Hz (c) 1011 Hz
Write one application of each.

10. A converging and a diverging lens of equal focal lengths are placed co-axially in contact. Find the power and
the focal length of the combination. [2 Marks]

11. Distinguish between 'point to point' and 'broadcast' communication modes. Give one example of each.

12. What orientation of an electric dipole in a uniform electric field corresponds to its stable equilibrium ?

13. Horizontal and vertical components of earth’s magnetic field at a place are 0.22 tesla and 0.38 tesla respectively.
Find the resultant intensity of earth’s magnetic field. [2 Marks]
14. An emf of 0.5V is developed in the secondary coil, when current in primary coil changes from 5.0 A to
2.0 A in 300 millisecond. Calculate the mutual inductance of the two coils. [2 Marks]

15. A thin converging lens has a focal length ’f’ in air. If it is completely immersed in a liquid of refractive
index , briefly explain how the focal length of the lens will vary ? [2 Marks]

16. Two lines A and B, in the plot given below show the variation of de Broglie wavelength,
 versus V , where V is the accelerating potential difference, for two particles
carrying the same charge. Which one of two represents a particle of smaller mass?

17. Figure is the plot of the stopping potential versus the frequency of the light
used in an experiment on photoelectric effect. Find [2 Marks]
(a) the ratio h/e and

(b) the work function.

18. A microwave telephone link operating at the central frequency of 10 GHz has been established. If 2% of
those available for microwave communication channel, then how many telephones channel can be
simultaneously granted if each telephone is allotted a bandwidth of 8 kHz. [2 Marks]

19. Write the truth table of circuit given in figure below consisting of NOR gates. Identify the logic operation
(OR, AND, NOT) which this circuit is performing. [3 Marks]

20. (a) Three resistors 2  ,4  and 5  are combined in parallel. What is the total resistance of the combination?
(b) If the combination is connected to a battery of emf 20 V and negligible internal resistance, determine
the current through each resistor, and the total current drawn from the battery. [3 Marks]

21. A galvanometer coil has a resistance of 15 and the metre shows full scale deflection for a current of
4 mA. How will you convert the metre into an ammeter of range 0 to 6 A . [3 Marks]

22. (i) Draw the graphs showing variation of inductive reactance and capacitive reactance with frequency of
applied a.c. source.
(ii) Can the voltage drop across the inductor or the capacitor in a series LCR circuit be greater than the
applied voltage of the a.c. source ? Justify your answer. [3 Marks]

23. A conducting rod of length  with one end pivoted is rotated with a uniform angular speed  in a vertical
plane, normal to a uniform magnetic field B. Deduce expression for the emf induced in this rod.[3 Marks]

24. When the current in a certain inductor coil is 5.0 A and is increasing at the rate of 10.0 A/s, the potential
difference across the coil is 140 V. When the current is 5.0 A and decreasing at the rate of 10.0 A/s, the
potential difference is 60 V. Find the self inductance of the coil. [3 Marks]

25. Does short-sightedness (myopia) or long-sightedness (hypermetropia) imply necessarily that the eye has
partially lost its ability of accommodation? If not, what might cause these defects of vision? [3 Marks]
26. An angular magnification ( magnifying power ) of 30 X is desired using an objective of focal length 1.25cm
and an eye-piece of focal length 5 cm. How will you set up the compound microscope? [3 Marks]
27. The ground state energy of hydrogen atom is –13.6 eV.
(i) What is the kinetic energy of an electron in the 2nd excited state ?
(ii) If the electron jumps to the ground state from the 2nd excited state, calculate the wavelength of the
spectral line emitted. [3 Marks]

28. The intensity of light pulse travelling along a fibre decreases exponentially with distance according to the equation

29. Define (i) output resistance and (ii) current amplification factor of a transistor in common emitter
