Species I am researching: Black Rhino

My notes URL

Is your animal Threatened or Endangered? (What does this mean?) https://www.worldwildlife

Endangered .org/species/black-rhino

Reasons for endangerment: https://www.worldwildlife

Has there been a loss or change in the environment or food supply. Is the species hunted or cultivated .org/species/black-rhino
for food or other reasons, or has it declined because of disease? There can be many reasons why a
species has become threatened or endangered, some created and some because of a break-down in
their life cycle. Many may cite habitat destruction, but you need to give details of why there is habitat
destruction.

Black rhino horns are extremely valuable and poached for those horns. Also,
black rhinos live in areas where humans live in poverty and need a source of
food (black rhinos).

Timeline of endangerment: https://www.worldwildlife

Starting on the date your species was put on the IUCN list, include at least 4 major events in its .org/species/black-rhino
conservation/preservation history - see the example on the final project page.
Black rhinos were put onto the IUCN Red List in 1986.
-WWF and the Namibian government developed transmitters to track
rhino movements and protect them against poaching
-The Black Rhino Range Expansion Project was established in 2003
-Between 1970 and 1992, 96 percent of Africa's remaining black rhinos
were killed
-In 2014, a total of 1,215 rhinos were poached in South Africa – a 21
percent increase from the previous year

Human Importance https://www.worldwildlife

How is your species important to humans? - ideas: economic, conservation, cultural, etc. .org/species/black-rhino
Black rhinos are important to the nations they are located in because they
help nations such as Namibia draw tourism to them and provide more
money. Also, black rhinos create large blocks of land for conservation and
help benefit other species such as elephants.

How many are left? https://www.worldwildlife

Use different sources to confirm the number and include a population graph .org/species/black-rhino
The estimated population of black rhinos is 5,000 and 5,400 rhinos https://www.savetherhin

Government intervention https://www.worldwildlife

How have the governments where your animal resides intervened to save your species? .org/species/black-rhino
Namibia has worked with WWF to create more effective security monitoring,
better biological management and wildlife-based tourism. Namibia has also
been tracking the rhinos to keep track of them. Other countries such as South
Africa have helped create more land to create new rhino populations.
