“Total Recycling in Denmark?

The objective of the Waste Management Association of Malaysia(WMAM) is
to represent the interest of its members from the whole waste sector of Malaysia. To this end WMAM is
initiating a series of “Tea Talks” to support professional development of those working within or interested
in knowledge about the sector.

For the first of these Tea Talks we have invited The Managing Director of the
Danish Waste Management Association (DAKOFA), Suzanne Arup Veltze, to give a
presentation on Danish waste management, including information of amount of waste
being produced and treatment of different kinds of waste. The recycling rate in Denmark
is very high, 65 % of all kinds of waste (including industrial waste) is recycled, and only 6 %
is disposed at landfill. The presentation includes an overview of the development of the
waste policy that gives the background for the successful recycling rates.

Suzanne Arup Veltze is a lawyer by profession and worked for many years in the Danish Ministry for
Environmental Protection. She has been working with waste since 1984, where she was the head of the Waste
Division in the Environmental Protection Agency. During this time she was responsible for introducing what is
called “the Danish Waste Model”. Since 1991 she has been the Managing Director of DAKOFA which is the
Danish Waste Management Association. During this period she was also Managing Director of the International
Solid Waste Association from 1997 – 2007.
