2. Brief overview

The course contains basic engineering tools which can be applied to obtain numerical
solutions to Engineering problems.

3. Course Objectives/Goals

The objective of the course is to bring out the potential ability of the students to be able to
apply numerical methods to solve engineering problems. Students will also be able to apply
numerical analysis software packages to solve simple engineering problems.

1  Finite difference. Interpolation. Numerical differentiation and integration.

2  Numerical solution of ordinary differential equations, Trapezoidal, Simpson,


Runge Kutta methods.

3  Newton Raphson method for roots of equations

4  System of simultaneous linear equations

6  Linear simultaneous equations, Gaussian elimination, Gauss-Seidel iterative

7  Jacobi Method, evaluation of determinant and inverse matrix

Tutorials: tutorial questions will form the basis of examples to be given to the
students to work out.
Assignment and test will be given. These will form part of their continuous
assessment.
14 Examinations
Structure of the programme/method of grading:
Continuous assessment: 30%. Examination: 70%
