objects around us.
As we turn into 2018, we’re focused on defining the Alliance’s
role in bringing the Internet of Things to consumers. How can
the Zigbee Alliance and its members deliver on the promise of a
world of connected things?
This year, perhaps more than any other, our members are deter-
mined to solve the IoT challenges that plague our industry as a
whole, and the Alliance is reflecting that in our priorities, sup-
port and evolution.
This resource guide provides a sampling of that work, the solu-
tions available, and some of the market considerations as manu-
facturers entertain wading into this explosive industry.
The market is evolving. Quickly. We’ve seen models that start-
ed off as a hub+ approach where a single lightbulb constituted
a consumer’s first experience. Now, that’s expanding to whole
home systems, connected experiences, video doorbells and
more as consumers get familiar with smart possibilities, and
forge further to bring that technology into their surroundings.
Zigbee applications are gaining tremendous traction in com-

The Internet of Things promises an enor-
mous market opportunity. And while there
are tremendous growth possibilities to-
wards the future, the market window is
already open today. Building with Zigbee
gives you an immediate return on invest-
ment, with an established global market for
Zigbee products across consumer and commercial industries. Zigbee
is mature and derisked, with a global supply chain of Zigbee platforms
and services, rigorous testing, and field-proven deployment on hun-
dreds of millions of existing devices.
Zigbee addresses a broad set of applications, including lighting con-
trols, alarms and home security, temperature and energy manage-
ment systems, smart appliances, and health care monitoring prod-
ucts. By unifying the legacy application profiles Zigbee Light Link (ZLL),

IoT security is nothing new to the Zigbee Alli-
ance. We continue to evolve the protocol as
it is applied to new markets, or new threats
are identified. Zigbee 3.0 provides the tools
to form, operate, and update a network in a
secure manner. The use of install codes dur-
ing network formation has been a require-
ment for the Smart Energy protocol for years,
and now has been added to the Zigbee 3.0 protocol. The install code pro-
vides a unique joining key between the device and the coordinator, such
that the network key can only be received by the joining node.
The network is protected with an AES 128-bit network key. Further,
network operators may enable device-to-device application layer se-
curity. Zigbee provides tools to monitor the network for interference,
either intentional or not. Based on the interference, the network can
be reformed on a clear channel. The inference may also be reported to
the network operator if further action is required. The network key can
and should be rotated periodically, which greatly reduces an attacker’s
ability to gain access to the network, along with refreshing the replay
attack protection.

ployments and older legacy systems is essential to embrace innova-
tion while preserving the investment made by building managers and
home owners. Forward compatibility ensures the interoperability of
devices which implement newer versions of the standard with exist-
ing devices. Both backward and forward compatibility are important
to give manufacturers and consumers piece of mind that their invest-
ment is future-proof and their installed systems are robust in these
dynamic and innovative times.
By design, Zigbee 3.0 Certified and branded products will interoper-
ate with each other in ways meaningful to the end user. Zigbee 3.0
enables you to upgrade and migrate your smart systems in an evolu-
tionary and modular way, to ensure that existing devices and systems
can still be used in the future even when technology evolves and in-
novation occurs.
Philips Lighting, the leading company in the lighting industry, has cho-
sen Zigbee 3.0 as the lighting control technology underpinning im-
portant propositions in their connected portfolio. There is, of course,
Philips Hue, the personal wireless lighting solution for the connected
home. But Philips Lighting also has a strong Zigbee-based portfolio for
indoor professional applications. This includes the Philips InstantFit
LED T8 lamps with EasySmart technology (a wireless retrofit solution
for offices and warehouses, obviating the need to replace existing

Recently, the United States Federal Trade Commission recommended
that device manufactures provide a means to update devices in the
field, and inform customers about the capability. Zigbee provides a ro-
bust secure update process, which supports both sleepy and non-sleepy
nodes. All updates are signed to guarantee their authenticity, and then
delivered over a secure link. Many platform providers also support en-
cryption of the image when stored in external memory.
The Security Advisory Group works with each of the technical working
groups as they add new features to the protocol. The group is also ac-
tive in the review and response to security papers as they apply to any
of the Zigbee protocols. Further, we are re-engaging outside research-
ers to perform an updated audit of Zigbee 3.0, and the underlying pro-
tocol stack. I highly recommend any member who is interested in the
latest security updates to join the group.

Long-Life Lithium Batteries Power Remote Wireless Devices for up to 40 Years

Industrial grade lithium batteries extend the life of low-power wireless devices
The development of low-power communications protocols such
as Zigbee, WirelessHART, and LoRa has enabled remote wireless
devices to expand into a variety of applications that encompass
the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). These applications include
remote sensors, asset tracking, machine-to-machine (M2M), and
system control and data automation (SCADA), to name a few.
Lithium batteries allow remote industrial devices to become ‘tru-
ly wireless’ by eliminating the high cost, logistics, and regulatory
issues associated with hard-wiring, which can become extremely
problematic in remote, environmentally-sensitive locations.
Challenging Applications Call for Industrial Grade Batteries
Every application is unique, and numerous factors impact the
choice between a consumer or industrial grade battery. For ex-
ample, if the application involves two-way wireless communica-
tions it will typically require high pulses of energy to initiate data
interrogation and transmission. Consumer alkaline batteries can
deliver high pulses, but have major limitations such as low en-
ergy density that adds bulkiness, a high self-discharge rate that
reduces life expectancy to one to two years, a moderate tem-
perature range (0°C to 60°C), low voltage (1.5 V or lower), and
crimped seals that may leak. The low cost an alkaline battery can
be highly misleading with respect to the total cost of ownership
over the life of the device.
Lithium batteries are ideally suited for industrial applications, as
their intrinsic negative potential exceeds that of all other metals.
As the lightest non-gaseous metal, lithium offers the highest spe-
cific energy (energy per unit weight) and energy density (energy
per unit volume) of all commercial battery chemistries. Lithium
cells, all of which use a non-aqueous electrolyte, feature a nor-
mal operating current voltage (OCV) between 2.7 and 3.6V. The
absence of water also makes lithium batteries better adapted to
extreme temperatures.
Among primary (non-rechargeable) lithium batteries, bobbin-
type lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCl2) cells are overwhelmingly
preferred for long-term deployments that draw low average dai-
ly current. Bobbin-type LiSOCl2 cells feature the highest capacity

and highest energy density of any available chemistry, along with
the widest possible temperature range (-80°C to 125°C).
The self-discharge rate of a bobbin-type LiSOCl2 cell can vary sig-
nificantly based on the method of manufacturing and the quality
of the raw materials. For example, a superior quality LiSOCl2 cell
can feature an annual self-discharge rate as low as 0.7%, thus
retaining nearly 70% of its original capacity after 40 years. By
contrast, a lower quality bobbin-type LiSOCl2 cell can have an
annual self-discharge rate of up to 3% per year, losing nearly 30%
of its available capacity every 10 years, thus making 40-year bat-
tery life virtually impossible.
Modifying LiSOCl2 Batteries to Deliver High Pulses
To deliver the high pulses required for two-way wireless commu-
nications, a common solution is to combine a standard bobbin-
type LiSOCL2 cell that delivers low background current with a
patented hybrid layer capacitor (HLC) that works like a recharge-
able battery to deliver periodic high pulses.
Supercapacitors often perform this function in consumer appli-
cations, but are unsuited for most industrial applications due to
inherent limitations, including an inability to provide long-term
power, linear discharge qualities that do not allow for use of all
the available energy, low capacity, low energy density, and high
annual self-discharge rates (up to 60% per year). Supercapacitors
linked in series also require the use of cell-balancing circuits that
draw additional current.
Energy Harvesting Applications Are on the Rise
The rapid expansion of the IIoT has created dynamic opportunities
for energy harvesting devices that work in tandem with recharge-
able Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries to store the harvested energy.
Consumer-grade Li-ion cells cannot deliver the
high pulses required to support two-way wireless
communications. Consumer Li-ion batteries also
have a limited operating life of up to 5 years and
500 recharge cycles, along with a moderate tem-
perature range.
Many industrial grade energy harvesting applica-
tions may be better served by an industrial grade
Li-ion battery, the TLI Series, which can operate for
up to 20 years and 5,000 full recharge cycles, deliv-
er high pulses (5 A for a AA-size cell), and provide
an expanded temperature range (-40 to 85°C).
Together, industrial grade Li-ion batteries and bob-
bin-type LiSOCl2 batteries offer a dynamic range
of options for powering a wide range remote wireless devices
that are being integrated into the fast-growing IIoT.

Smart home devices begin to be a part of consumers’ life, al-
lowing them to monitor and control applications in many ways:
home and lifestyle monitoring, improved energy efficiency, ac-
cess and security control.

With the SimpleLink multi-protocol CC26xx devices, TI is fueling innova-

TI’s Zigbee implementation, commonly referred to as Z-Stack, is delivered

as a full software development kit (SDK) including a certified stack, applica-
tion examples for the most common end equipment sets, collateral docu-
mentation, and tools and training modules to jumpstart development. TI
Zigbee SDKs support the latest Zigbee standard (formerly referred to as
3.0) and provide a full system solution (including a gateway reference) that

opportunity for theft. Embedding the sensors within the door
hinge accomplishes both of these outcomes that are desired by
procurement and facilities managers.
Our Curtain Motion NCZ-3045, Wall-Mounted NCZ-3041 and
Ceiling-Mounted NCZ-3043 sensors all report room occupancy,
humidity and temperature of the room in which they are
installed. The curtain sensor in particular is unique in that it
sends the status across a narrow space allowing for precise
analysis of a specific location within a room.

The NCZ-3014, our Garage Door Sensor, sends
the status (vertical or horizontal) of a garage
door. These sensors have also been adapted
for tracking the status of high-valued assets to
establish if they have been tampered with or
removed from their location (i.e. a piece of art
hanging on a wall).
Each of the NYCE sensors send data to a
central controller so that an immediate action
can be taken (alarm, alert, record etc.) as well
as storing the data for further analytics.
