ORIGINAL WORK PROPOSAL
As I continue to expand my knowledge about the field of Psychology, it has been reiterated to
me multiple times that in order to be successful you must connect with your patients in order to
understand their mind and behavior. The most eye opening reality that has been taught to me
through my interview process is that psychologists must undergo their own therapy to stay in touch
with themselves and their truth. One of the reasons that I am inspired to pursue psychology roots
from a truth/tragedy of my own. In 2011, I lost my dad to a heart attack. After months of floating in the
vortex of grieving, my heart grew stronger and my soul has been resilient in various areas of my life
today. My ultimate question is: “How can I use my experiences to help my community though
psychology?” With this question driving my visions and goals in the Independent Study and
Mentorship program, my passion progresses and my experience has become invaluable thus far.
Meaningful and heartfelt interactions with patients can consist of giving guidance or simply listening
to them express their experiences, adversities, or everyday life occurrences. I have talked to
professionals who are welcoming, relatable, and empathizing individuals. No matter the age group or
reason for receiving treatment, the warmth of an inviting persona is imperative when working with
clients of many backgrounds.
With the synthesis method, I plan to generate a feasibility study in order to discover if there is a
need for a student led group or program in the Frisco Independent School District that supports,
guides, and shares the pain of grief with other students. With the guidance and credentials of an
existing program or  professional, I will be able to implement my vision thoroughly. The group would
be a comforting network for adolescent hearts that have ached with tragedy in the past or the present.
We would have meetings/events, partner up with elementary schools, listen to guest speakers, and
inspire the student bodies of Frisco ISD. This will illuminate our community as well through
psychology and connections to one another. However, in order for my vision to become a reality, my
feasibility study consists of three tasks.
The most essential task will be to contact professionals and resources that could reveal the need
for this group in the community, district, or campus level. These contacts include leaders in the Frisco
Independent School District schools such as counselors, principals, and professionals/ revered
programs in the community that could assist me with my work. The next task is to construct a survey
to students to find out if they would partake in the development and success of the group and if they
are willing to share their grief and/or guidance with other peers. My final tasks will be to create sparks
that could initiate the implementation of the group such as color schemes, a logo, methods of
advertising, and an overall message that students and counselors feel comfortable confiding in. The
purpose of the group is to take my experience and transform it into a new energy of hope, warmth,
and inspiration for other young people to encourage resilience and peace in my community.
With unknown boundaries, feedback, and opinions of my concept, I am aware that there will be
challenges and hurdles that I must overcome. After conducting the feasibility study, I will gain clarity
and knowledge on what is attainable and what is not attainable in my plan. I will convert my research
and findings into a tangible item such as a binded booklet so that when I present my plan to a leader in
decision making, they will see my dedication through visuals, statistics, and quotes from other
professionals. Gathering opinions from psychologists in the community will enhance my concept and
hopefully flourish my original work as a whole.
By creating a support program with professional resources and an open hearted group of teens, I
will be able to answer my driving question of how I can use my personal experience to help my
community through psychology. My ultimate goal is to create a genuine, safe, and relatable
environment filled with teens who want to share their story, encourage reflection, and design a
compassionate haven for those who need it. With detailed planning and allegiance to my idea, I know
that I have the skillset and devotion to make my feasibility study as successful as possible.

SURVEYS
Specific Random Survey
STUDENT A
WHS senior, lost cousin in August 2017

She was "extremely sad and shocked" when

she lost her cousin to cancer. She explained

that his journey with cancer took his life

quickly. She feels that people who can't

express their feelings to family/friends, can

use the support group to remind them that

they aren't the only ones in pain. Student A

felt like the group would be a way to "relate

to other students on a different level." ---

"They would feel the love and support of

their peers."
Task #2
SURVEYS
Specific Random Survey
STUDENT B
WHS junior, lost mom in December 2017

Student B admitted that she isn't sure how

people overcome "hard times like these."

She is involved in many activities at Wakeland

but taking part in something that "means

something to her and others" would be great

to have in her life. She explained that she

wishes that this group was already happening

on campus. However, she said that she would

not be willing to share her pain and experience

just yet, as this survey was conducted the

same month that she lost her mom.

Task #2

Specific Random Survey
STUDENT C
WHS senior, lost dad in July 2016

He admits that he is bad at communicating what

he feels but he knows that he would appreciate

a group that proves that "someday you'll be

okay." He is willing to share his story with

others only to help them heal. He reveals that

at first, it looks like "you can't get through

the sadness." He says that he would tell the

people in the group that "Eventually, you'll

gain a new mindset and carry on while

keeping that person in your everyday

thoughts."
