FOREWORD
There are several words to describe the auction this Spring: ‘Enormous’, ‘Coloueful” and ‘Varied among them. T
would like to say ‘Spectacular is but that isn’t really our style. This World Banknotes auction is actually our largest
ever, with over 2200 lots and a vast array of countries. We have all been working night and day to prepare the
catalogue in time for the big World Paper Money Fair in Valkenburg and the following weeks" auction.
In fact, I think “varied” describes the sale perfectly. We have hundreds of issued notes, colour trials and my favourite,
the composite essays for the notes that never were. We have our usual selection of specimens, a crucial piece of the
banknote collecting puzzle. If I were a collector T would love the opportunity to display my collection from the
original composite essay, the die proof, to the colour trial, the specimen and finally the issued note. Altogether a
logical and beautiful progression.
Highlights of the auction must be the Ali Mehilba collections of Irag and Libya. Ali wrote the standard work on the
currency of Libya and the majority of the notes in the auction are plate notes from the book. We have a superb group
fiom Syria and Lebanon, excellent early Spain and many rare or unique South American specimens. There is also a
very interesting and eclectic collection of items belonging to Arthur Julian Moulton, including a lovely Bermuda £1
of 1914 and a very rare Gibraltar 10/- of 1914. The notes in this collection are highlighted with blue lot numbers.
For the British Isles, once again in their own catalogue, we have a great Scottish section, a lovely group of Tsle of Man
notes and a well rounded English selection.
In terms of individual notes, we are featuring a truly magnificent Norway 1000 kroner and a gorgeous East Affican
500 florins, However, the two stars of the show have to be the completely unknown and probably unique Egypt
£10 of 1952 featuring the portrait of King Farouk, who was deposed before the note could be issued, and the British
India 10 rupees of 1863 with a portrait of Queen Victoria, a mind boggling rarity.
Lalways worry about the next sale, where will the notes come from, how is the market doing, etc, ete, but as the years
have gone by the sales do keep coming. This relatively new market has shown itself to be most robust. I have said it
before but I think it bears repeating, ‘the banknote market is a collectors market and as such a healthy marker”, and
if the Spink catalogues can farther this through our auctions then Iam satisfied that we have played our part in this
fascinating subject.
Good luck to you all,
Barnaby and AndrewSPINK
