Lab. No. 4 – Columns & Beams

In your calculations indicate which Clause of S16-09 applies and always include units with the numbers
in your calculations.

Problem No. 1 – rolled steel column (Fy= 345 MPa)

(25 marks)
A column W360x237 (W14x159) is 15-metres high and supported laterally at its top and
bottom only.
calculate the following section properties of the column from its cross-sectional
dimensions and compare to the “tabulated values” on page 6-48 of the Handbook:
W360x237 column:
Class = ________________?

Section properties:
A= 30,100 mm2
Ixx =
rx =
Iyy =
ry =
Zx =

J=

Cw =

calculate <Fex, Fey, Fez > for this cross-section and the corresponding S16-09 values of
<Crx , Cry , Crz > according to equations in Clause 13.3 “Axial Compression”.

use the Green and White Tables to check your calculations.

Problem No. 2 – reinforced steel column

(35 marks)
The W360x237 (W14x159) column from problem 1 is reinforced as shown below with
an S460x104 (S18x70), split into two ST230x54 (S9x35), and welded to the W360 to
increase its column capacity. Re-calculate the column’s section properties and load
carrying capacity as you did in problem 1.
If you need the centroid of an ST230x54, it is 2.94” (75 mm) from the top of the flange,
and yp (to the pna) is 1.78” (45 mm) from the top of the flange.
Simplify your calculations by neglecting the separation of the STs by the web thickness
of the W360.
calculate section properties of the built-up column.
calculate <Fex, Fey, Fez > for this cross-section and the corresponding S16-09 values of
<Crx , Cry , Crz > according to equations in Clause 13.3 “Axial Compression”.
use the White Tables to check your calculations.

Problem No. 3 – Out-of-plane slenderness ratios and Cr values

(25 marks)
referring to the frame shown below, find the kx and ky of column AB (W310 x 86),
all connections are fully-continuous, the steel is G40.21-350W.
using Clause 13.3 determine the factored compressive resistance Cr of this column.
use the Green and White Tables to check your calculations.

Problem No. 4 – Blue Tables for beams

(20 marks)
W610x101 (W24x68) beam:
a) check, using longhand calculations, the values of Mr and Lu listed on page 5-94 of
the Handbook.
b) Le is defined as the unbraced length of compression flange at which the
“inelastic lateral-torsional buckling” and “elastic lateral-torsional buckling”
curves meet. The point of separation has been chosen as Mp for class 1 and
2 sections. Estimate the value of Le from the Blue Tables.

Problem No. 5 – coverplated beam ( laterally unsupported)

(45 marks)
Assume, the W460x82 coverplated beam from the Class Notes (Chapter 6) with a span of
L=6-metres is not laterally-braced for its entire span except at the ends.
The beam is a G40.21M-350W steel W460x82 ( Mr= 568 kN.m at Fy=345 MPa),
- using the equations for Mu, and L (shown below).

a) calculate built-up section properties: Zx , J and Cw, where Cw (Iflange h2/2), …

recall, Ixx(built-up section)= 2 (8mm x 150mm) (234 mm)2 + IxxW460x82
= 131.4 x 106 [mm4] + 370 x 106 [mm4]= 501.4 x 106 [mm4]
b) verify that the beam shape is a Class 2 section or better, why?
c) recall, the elastic Mu curve, Figure 2-14 (Commentary), has values of:
(i) Mu = (6.44 Mp) at Lb Lu : and,
(ii) Mu = Mp at at Lb Le.
calculate Lu for the unreinforced W460x82 (Fy=345 MPa), and compare to Lu= 2560mm
in the [Blue Tables, Fy=345 MPa]; is there a difference and why?
calculate Lu for the reinforced W460x82 (Fy=345 MPa)
calculate Le for the reinforced W460x82 (Fy=345 MPa)
calculate Mu, and the lateral-torsional buckling capacity Mr’ for Lb= L= 6000 mm.
